About the Author
Douglas Fisher, PhD, is professor of language and literacy education in the Department of Teacher Education at San Diego State University and a classroom teacher at Health Sciences High and Middle College. He teaches preservice courses in literacy and English language learners, graduate courses in reading instruction and intervention, and doctoral courses in policy, research, and literacy. As a classroom teacher, Dr. Fisher focuses on English language arts instruction. He was director of professional development for the City Heights Educational Collaborative and also taught English at Hoover High School.

Dr. Fisher received an International Reading Association Celebrate Literacy Award for his work on literacy leadership. For his work as codirector of the City Heights Professional Development Schools, Dr. Fisher received the Christa McAuliffe award. He was corecipient of the Farmer Award for excellence in writing from the National Council of Teachers of English for the article, "Using Graphic Novels, Anime, and the Internet in an Urban High School," published in The English Journal.

Dr. Fisher has written numerous articles on reading and literacy, differentiated instruction, and curriculum design. His books include Creating Literacy-Rich Schools for Adolescents, Checking for Understanding, Better Learning Through Structured Teaching, and Content-Area Conversations.

He earned a bachelor's degree in communication, a master's degree in public health, an executive master s degree in business, and a doctoral degree in multicultural education. Dr. Fisher completed post-doctoral study at the National Association of State Boards of Education focused on standards-based reforms.

Nancy Frey, PhD, is a professor of literacy in the School of Teacher Education at San Diego State University. Through the university's teacher-credentialing and reading specialist programs, she teaches courses on elementary and secondary reading instruction and literacy in content areas, classroom management, and supporting students with diverse learning needs. Dr. Frey also teaches classes at Health Sciences High and Middle College in San Diego. She is a board member of the California Reading Association and a credentialed special educator and reading specialist in California.

Before joining the university faculty, Dr. Frey was a public school teacher in Florida. She worked at the state level for the Florida Inclusion Network helping districts design systems for supporting students with disabilities in general education classrooms.

She is the recipient of the 2008 Early Career Achievement Award from the National Reading Conference and the Christa McAuliffe Award for excellence in teacher education from the American Association of State Colleges and Universities. She was corecipient of the Farmer Award for excellence in writing from the National Council of Teachers of English for the article Using Graphic Novels, Anime, and the Internet in an Urban High School.

Dr. Frey is coauthor of Checking for Understanding, Better Learning Through Structured Teaching, and Content-Area Conversations. She has written articles for The Reading Teacher, Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy, The English Journal, Voices in the Middle, Middle School Journal, Remedial and Special Education, and Educational Leadership.

Solid resource for educators

Common Core English Language Arts in a PLC at Work is a plain-language resource to understanding the parameters of Common Core and instituting them in grades K-2. The book is designed to be used by educators in conjunction with a school district’s roll-out of the Common Core and encourages collaborative planning on the local level.

The book provides an overview of what the Common Core English standard is designed to accomplish and how to use collaborative teams to construct learning plans. Chapters two through four provide guidelines on implementing the standard for reading, writing, and speaking/listening respectively. Chapter five discusses general implementation of assessments and how to help students who are struggling with the lessons.
The authors make intelligent use of graphs and charts to break down information and help educators digest the content. A few of the text blocks, however, are inexplicably formatted in landscape position, forcing you to turn the book sideways to read them. These blocks could have easily been formatted in portrait position. It strikes me as an odd choice for non-graphic text blocks to be designed in such a fashion.

I was annoyed by the fact that the web address provided on the back of the book to access “free” downloadable resources related to the book was apparently wrong. The address on the book redirects to the company’s main page. You then have to look around for the link to access the downloadable content. You are then prompted to create an account to access it. I didn't create an account as I don’t want to end up on yet another mailing list, so I cannot say whether or not the downloadable content is value-added or not.

Despite a few minor design quibbles, the book is a solid resource for educators who are about to roll-out Common Core standard in their districts. The simple, straightforward language and logical organization makes the book’s concepts easy to follow and implement.

I am excited to get back to our grade level's PLC's and implement the practical ideas and strategies provided in this pragmatic resource. Authors Fisher and Frey not only know the common core, but also students and teachers! About the Author
Josephine Tey was a Scottish author; born in Inverness, best known for her mystery novels. In six of the mystery novels, the most famous is The Daughter of Time, in which Grant, laid up in hospital, has friend’s research reference book and contemporary documents so that he can puzzle out the mystery of whether King Richard III of England murdered his nephews, the Princes in the Tower. Grant comes to the firm conclusion that King Richard was totally innocent of the death of the Princes. In 1990, The Daughter of Time was selected by the British-based Crime Writers' Association as the greatest mystery novel of all time; Her another one, The Franchise Affair was 11th on the same list of 100 books.

This is so clearly a PDF that has been 'published' as a book. There are no page numbers, the cover description is rife with spelling and grammar mistakes, and the chapter headings are to put it kindly, strange. Don't buy this book. My dad got a laugh out of it because it was so awful but unless you enjoy novelty items, this publication is ridiculous.

I think I'm hooked

Not embarrassed to say that I never heard of Tey until quite recently. Read her 1st Grant book, The Man in the Queue, which I enjoyed enough to prompt me to read book 2. This was very good and now I have become a fan. It's kind of exciting knowing that there is a whole body of work out there that I now get to explore. Kind of feel like I did after I first read The Sign of Four. Looking forward to book 3 which I may save for our trip to the outer banks in a few weeks (if I can wait that long).

This would appear to be a bootleg copy, filled with misspellings! Whoever did this appears not to be terribly familiar with the English language. Just read the back cover for a sample of errors. We are returning this book

This short book is filled with important information anyone could benefit from to get motivated to make changes in their lives. I especially like to read things about Habits and how to break them, as this author discusses. This book actually could easily be made into 4 distinct books, with each chapter being expanded to deliver more punch and information. Good Read.

A little short but a good primer!

This book, while a little short, is a good primer for learning some of the basic tenants for change and thus success. He starts off showing that all people have the potential for change and that you can remove your personal limitations blocking change.

Next, he discusses a topic I personally feel is instrumental in the road to success; habits. He explains how our habits are formed and then summarize how to form habits of success. Once an action becomes a habit, it becomes automatic and easy to perform.

Another area important to success is copying those who have already succeeded. The author discusses this concept and how to set your own goals/objectives.

Finally, he wraps up his primer discussing mentoring by others who are already successful. This is of vital importance for any success as there's no better way to the road to success than to learn and be taught by someone who's already walked that path.

New Ideas for an old standby

At first I thought "what could there be to know about how to cook brown rice" - but there are some really appealing recipes in this ebook, so yes very happy to have cookbook.

I think this book is a 4 star book. It would have been a 5 star rating but only two stories were is it but other than that I loved it. It stumped me on the egg mystery.
