From May 1915 to October 1917 the armies of Italy and the Austro-Hungarian empire were locked into a series of twelve battles along the River Isonzo, a sixty-mile front from the Alps to the Adriatic. The campaign was fought in the most appalling terrain for combat, with horrendous casualties on both sides, often exceeding those of the more famous battles of the Great War. The twelfth and final battle, Caporetto, resulted in a devastating defeat for Italy and led to one of the greatest breakthroughs achieved during the entire conflict. Yet this massive struggle is too often neglected in histories of the war which focus on the fighting on the Western and Eastern Fronts. John Macdonald, in this accessible and highly illustrated account, aims to set the record straight. His description of the Isonzo battles, of the battlefields and of the atrocious conditions in which the soldiers lived and fought is supported by a graphic selection of original photographs that record the terrible reality of the conflict. The impact of the intervention of British, French and German troops is covered, as are the parts played by famous individuals – among them Rommel, Mussolini, Badoglio and Cadorna, the notorious Italian commander in chief. But it is the front-line experience of the common soldiers on both sides that is most powerfully portrayed. Caporetto and the Isonzo Campaign gives a fascinating insight into a conflict that was a pivotal moment in the history of Italy, Austria and the Balkans.

About the Author
John Macdonald was a distinguished management theorist, consultant and lecturer who wrote many influential books on management, business and politics. His special interest in the Great War and the fighting on the Italian Front in particular was inspired by a visit to the battlefields in Slovenia and Italy, and he made an in-depth study of the Isonzo battles and the entire campaign. He completed this book shortly before he died in 2011.

A nice overview.

I do not know what the first reviewer of this book has in his collection, but having an Austrian last name, I have been collecting books on the Austro-Hungarian KuK Army for some years. There are a fair number of books out there, although some require an internet search due to being out of print. As for example,I have 32 books on the Austrian Army in the Great War, of which 13 are specifically the Italian Front, or dealing with Caporetto itself (two are in German by men who were there). A recent and very through volume is by John Schindler. The late author of this volume even when so far as to state other books were of much more detail, and scope (including Schindlers). His objective was to provide the newcomer a nice primer to the subject of the Italian Campaign. That is what he did, and as I have a degree in military history, I could find no fault with it. The bulk of the period photographs were taken right from the archives of the museum near Caporetto, which was refreshing. There was even a photo of Russian POW's (used to build roads, bridges, and fortifications)with their Austrian captors. One facet I liked of this book was the author's attention of what happended concerning the ordinary soldier of either side. Some details regarding uniforms, weapons, morale, and training were laid out. Mr. MacDonald did a fine job, as I said, for what he set out to do, and I was certainly saddened by the fact that he died of illness shortly after the volume went into publication.

Good overview of the fighting on this little known front in World War 1

In his preface to this book, historian John Macdonald notes that the few books in English about the Isonzo and Caporetto Campaigns were all detailed (and long) books, and that he saw a need for a shorter less detailed book, with copious pictures from the era, for the more casual reader. So, I kept that thought in mind as I read this book. As I'm somewhat of a war history buff, I'm fairly familiar with the Battle of Caporetto and am somewhat familiar with the battles of the Isonzo. So, in a way, I'm the target audience, in that I want to learn more about the fighting here without necessarily wanting the level of detail contained in historian David Glantz's works the eastern front in World War 2. At least not yet. :-) Below are my impressions of this book.
I think Macdonald did a very good job of balancing the level of detail he provided in this book ... deep enough for grognards like me, yet accessible in a meaningful way to people who aren't very aware of the fighting on this front during the Great War. The writing is clear, concise, and easily readable, which was no mean feat, as he was ill during the time he was writing it. (Sadly, he died shortly after the book's completion.) He covers not only the fighting, but the leaders, weapons, army structure, and perhaps most importantly, the terrain over which the battles were fought. The pictures are uniformly excellent, and added greatly to my enjoyment of the book.
Overall, this book hits the author's intended target. It's a good book for the casual reader, or as a good overview for those who want to learn more about the fighting between Italy and Austria-Hungary during World War I. I recommend this book to those audiences. Four stars.

Average book. But covers a little known subject.

This is not a great book but it is one of the few books about the little covered Italian campaign in W.W.1. If as I did you have little knowledge of this campaign it does provide a reasonable if sketchy background to the numerous battles along the Isonzo. It is however lacking in much detail and is very short on maps,diagrams,details of equipment etc. In common with other Pen&Sword publications I own it is quite well illustrated with photos but as usual they are small and poorly reproduced. All in all worth owning for providing at least some information on this little known aspect of the war but could have been so much better.
