The Little Mermaid is a fairy tale by the Danish author Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875). It was first published in 1836; then it was traslated in English by Mrs. Henry H.B. Paull (1812–1888) in 1872.

If the entries in Stories from Hans Christian Andersen (see review above) dilute the headiness of their models, this volume presents a close-to-pristine translation of one of Andersen's most popular works along with highly charged and rather adult illustrations. The mid-19th-century translation by Mary Howitt (a friend of Andersen's) fully embraces the story's sense of yearning, courage and tragedy. Only minor changes have been made, according to a publisher's note, chiefly, "eliminating some brief passages of heavily detailed description and moralizing." The prose here tends toward a somewhat removed elegance as opposed to a homely, conversational style. The art, however grand and lush the palace scenes, verges on the lurid when Santore trains his brush on the mermaid. She is eroticized, much like the figures in Charles Micolaycak's Orpheus. Young mermaid fanciers might do better with Mary Pope Osborne's Mermaid Tales from Around the World (reviewed June 28). Ages 8-up.

Grade 3-6-The story of the young mermaid who sacrifices her life for the human prince she loves is faithfully brought to life in this picture book. The text is largely unabridged and based on the translation by Mary Howitt, a contemporary and friend of the author who introduced his work to English-speaking audiences. The opulent full-page watercolors are a perfect complement to the fairy tale. Santore's sensuous depiction of the mermaids, with their floating, smoky curls, is suitably art nouveau and seems inspired by the works of Mucha and Beardsley. Through his clever use of contrasting palettes, the illustrations create two distinct worlds: the ethereal blues and greens of the Sea King's undersea realm, and the sun-drenched reds and golds of the prince's domain. The only awkward note in this book is the overcrowding of the small type and its jarring placement over the artwork. Caveat aside, this stylish and authentic interpretation of Andersen's tale feels like a much-needed sea breeze when compared to the diluted Disney version.

Gr. 4-6, younger for reading aloud. This fine translation of Andersen's fairy tale first appeared in Michael Hague's Favorite Hans Christian Andersen Fairy Tales (1981). Hague's picture-book version is a colorful collection of undersea life--glittering fish, sparkling ocean flora, and merpeople with pearly tails float from page to page as the Little Mermaid pursues her impossible love. That the pictures do not always accurately reflect the text and that the faces of the characters are less graceful than their forms will go unnoticed by young readers captured by the romance of the subject at hand. The Little Mermaid's ultimate tragedy is foreshadowed by dark stormy seas and Andersen's own telling language. Parents may have to be warned that this is the antithesis of Disney, with a sad, if foregone, conclusion. Janice Del Negro

What a treasure!

Many authors and illustrators have tried to tell this story before, but this particular book is a treasure for any 6 to 9 year old to have in her collection of classic fairy tales. Each page of artwork should be a painting - they are so stunning and magical. This version follows the Hans Christian Andersen version of the famous tale, not the Disney movie. Therefore, the Little Mermaid goes up to heaven in the end, which may bother some preschoolers. The reading level is at about the 2nd grade level. A great book to share at story-time with an early reader, as the pictures will motivate them to try and read it.

beautiful story and loved the artwork

Growing up, Disney's version of this story was probably my favorite movie. Id really never known that there was a book until I came across it in the library(which is silly, because this is something of a classic.)
Reading this book rather enraged me. The ending is quite different from the Disney ending and I dont understand why they felt the need to change it. This is a lovely tale of unrequited love as well as failure and disapointment. Every story need not have a happy ending and unfortunately most children's tales do. Maybe Im a pessimist, but it seems that stories where everything works out in the end might be sending children the message of a perfect world where disapointment is out of the norm.
I just wish there were more stories of this sort to give kids a more realistic view of their future, because they have to learn sooner or later.

This is the MICHAEL HAGUE illustrated version!

There are many beautiful versions of this book, and I'm sure I'll eventually see all of the ones that people have reviewed here, but that cover you see up top is from the version illustrated by Michael Hague. I'm a little biased, but the book is really stunning: the artwork balances nicely between beautiful and frightening, and Andersen's original text tell's the Little Mermaid's simple story with a sensitivity toward her character that is rare in fiction written during the same period. While I'll admit that this book is probably best appreciated by children 6 years old and up, DO NOT insult your child's intelligence or maturity by thinking they can't handle a story in which the main character dies....the beauty of the story is in the the universal truth that love conquers all, outliving even death. What better lesson to teach children?
