Let me first begin by saying, Marcus Sakey is a friend of mine. He’s a friend because I read his whip-smart thrillers years ago (The Amateurs is one of my favorites) and loved them so much I decided I had to meet the twisted mind behind them. So I was a fan before I was a friend. After reading Brilliance, the scales may have tilted: I may now be more fan than friend—it’s that ridiculously good.

Fantastic Light Science Fiction Novel

First off, take all those blurbs about "nothing you've ever read before" and throw them out the window. You've read it before. What you will discover though is that Brilliance takes a decent idea and spins it into a absolutely fabulous story.
As one person mentioned, there is no small part of X-Men in here. Essentially you have the abnorms (Mutants) that began being born in 1980. Some of the mutants are good, some are bad, others are trying to get by. Their abilities are all focused in the mind (no laser eyes or metal claws), but they are jumping science forward by leaps and bounds.
You'll quickly understand that even though the book takes place in 2013, this is a completely alternate history. The world is different, the technology is more advanced and the rules have changed.
The book successfully intertwines the life of Nick Cooper, a powerful abnorm who works for the government with a wide cast of other characters. Nick hunts down terrorist abnorms for a living. Due to their powers, they've already crashed the stock market and in their fight for equality, some have taken to outright warfare against the government. Lead among the terrorists is John Smith, a man who orchestrated a major terrorist attack in Washington DC and is planning several more.
To give more of the story away would deny you of the myriad twists and turns the story takes. Needless to say, the story is a lot more intricate than it appears at first glance. It delves into issues of trust, racism, inadequacy and humanity in ways that modern genre fiction have failed to do.
And despite it being the first of a trilogy, it is completely satisfying when read by itself. So you won't have 18 months of cliffhangers to deal with.
It is my favorite book of the year so far and I can't wait to read what happens next.

Fast Pace, Action Filled, & Full of Suspense

I really don’t understand why there are negative reviews of this book—but I guess each to its own.
I bought this book and it was so good I jumped right into the next one, “A Better World” without taking the time to review this one. I really enjoyed this book because it was a different idea of anything I had ever read. People keep taking about the X-men but I have no idea what that is since I have never read any X-men books. Some have compared it with Jason Bourn but I didn’t find it that way myself. What I did find was that this story moves along at a fast pace with lots of action. I myself thought that Nick Cooper was a compassionate man and that he felt he was doing his patriotic duty by hunting terrorist even though they were abnorms (Mutants) like he is. Brilliants (or abnorms) are highly intelligent people were born with abilities that most normal people don’t have. There are not many of them but a lot of people that are normal fear that one day they will take over the US. It does not help that some of the Brilliants have turned into terrorist and are blowing up places. This is why Cooper feels it is his patriotic duty to hunt down these Brilliant terrorist—to keep America safe. The only way he can keep America safe is to try and prevent a war he sees coming between the Brilliants and the normals. There seems to be one big instigators that is causing most of the bombings and the unrest of the Brilliants—John Smith. So Cooper’s goal is to get to the root of the problem and hunt down Smith and eliminate him.
This whole book is about Cooper trying to find John Smith and along the way he receives unexpected help from another Brilliant—who is also a terrorist. Included in this story is about the relationship that Cooper has with his ex-wife and his 2 children. In the end it is because of one of his children that he enters the most dangerous mission of his life—one he may not live from. I won’t tell you any details, you just need to read the book yourself to find out all the details that I left out. This book is fast paced, action filled and had me tense with suspense a few times. I am now on the last book (book3) and can’t wait to get to the end.

Big Brother is Dividing Us!

Brilliance is a thriller with a dash of sci-fi and a whole lotta political intrigue. The main story line sets the country up into two factions-the gifted and the normal. Gifted people are NOT those who excel in calculus and physics. They are brilliant, hence the title, with almost supernatural powers. For example, the main character Nick Cooper, can zero in on one's body language and determine exactly what he/she will do. His daughter can organize just about anything into intricate patterns. The richest man in the world who bought the state of Wyoming can figure out algorithms within the stock market and make tons of money. There are no limits to what the gifted can learn let alone do.
These gifted types are identified and then put in a special school where they are pitted against each other. The friction is intentionally part of the government's curriculum. Big brother is really threatened. If they all get along, then everyone else would be screwed. The world still allows the gifted to work with the normals at many jobs such as government agencies which is where Nick Cooper comes in. He is an a DAR agent. This agency is like Homeland Security. He and his colleagues are on a mission to catch a terrorist, John Smith. Smith has been the patsy for several bombings. He has a following of other gifted people who want him to overthrow the government. He is connected to the richest man in the world who owns Wyoming, a place where the gifted can leave the regular world and be with their own kind.
Without giving too much away, Cooper soon learns he has been played.
My Review: This story touches on so many themes of paranoia within the government. Is art imitating life or life imitating art? The American media and politicians are constantly pumping up citizens to tear each other apart instead of trying to get along. Not to get too political, but I think we all know specifically what I'm talking about. Sakey uses the differences between humans instead of the commonalities for his novel. Are we threatened of groups of people with too much power? Whether it's intellect, money, or power, I think he's more than fair in pointing this out. It's human nature to want to keep what you believe is yours. The government could easily get toppled by a handful of people who are smarter, more talented, and more creative if they all managed to unite. Without spoiling anything, the end of the book is left open. Will Nick Cooper blow the lid off of corruption in anger or will he wait until the time is right? Will he bury the government's secrets in the name of peace? Will he and Shannon wind up a couple? Will he get back together with his wife? So many questions! I loved this book and will eventually get around to buying the next installment. Sakey writes with clarity, a sense of humor, and suspense. The characters were believable and likable. I loved the settings, especially China Town in Chicago. It has always been one of my favorite places to visit. I loved how he separated the country into two groups of people. The gifted were treated like the Jews under Hitler's rule. Great stuff, Marcus! 5 out of 5 Stars.
