The Unmarried Mother

Anyone born after the nineteen seventies really needs to read this book to see how much attitudes have changed since the nineteen fifties. The author grew up in a family where love was in short supply. Her mother regarded her as a nuisance and while she had a good relationship with some of her brothers and sisters life during and after World War II was not easy. I find it really sad when someone was happier during the nine months she spent in hospital because of Diphtheria than she ever was at home.

The section of the book which is the real eye opener for anyone who did not grow up in the nineteen fifties is when the author became pregnant. Contraception was unreliable and difficult to obtain especially if you were not married and legal abortion was not available. I was born in the nineteen fifties and I remember the mother and baby homes where unmarried mothers went to have their babies and give them up for adoption. It was the worst thing that could happen to a young girl in that era - to become pregnant outside marriage. It was always the woman's fault. It was impossible for a woman on her own to claim any form of welfare payments - benefits were for men only.

The author through sheer grit and determination and the help of her older sister and to a certain extent her mother managed to keep her daughter. She was fortunate that she had understanding employers as well but what she did was very unusual then. Some people she came across didn't judge her but there were others who regarded her as the lowest of the low. When her daughter was a toddler she met the man she was to marry - partly because he seemed happy to accept her daughter. But that was the start of a nightmare for both the author and her daughter.

I found this book compelling reading. It tells a poignant story in a very simple way which gives it a much bigger impact than it might otherwise have had. The author freely admits she made mistakes in her life and that she would have done some things differently given a choice. Her relationship with her mother was always problematical but at least her mother did accept her granddaughter in the end and allowed her daughter to live at home with the baby.

This is far from being a misery memoir and I enjoyed reading it. I found it most interesting for its portrayal of the attitudes and way of life in the nineteen fifties.

The Unmarried Mother in the 1950's

A very compelling life story. I grew up in the England of the war years and could relate to Shelia's story. I loved the detail about life in those times. Sure she made some mistakes but she tried her best for her children. I was horrified to read How her Mother and brother treated her. I married a G.I. and left England in 1953 ,I did love the open easy going outlines only lifelong that the Americans possessed. I admire her for doing as well as she did and am so glad her later years were happier. Once I started the book If could not put it down.

This book shows how attitudes to women have changed, especially to girls who become pregnant outside of marriage. Sixty years ago it was so something to be hidden and really ashamed of, today, it is something some people actually choose to do. This author was a rarity for those days, who chose to keep her baby and tells of her struggle to bring up her child. Society has changed so much in the last sixty years that what was the norm then is almost unbelievable today. An absorbing story.

Another great book by Jillian Dodd!!!

Ever since reading That Boy and That Wedding, Jillian Dodd was without a doubt my favorite author. She didn't let me down in Stalk Me, and she kept it up with Kiss Me! I think I may have actually liked this book a little bit better than the first! Just from the first book to the second, it's obvious that Keatyn has become a little more confident in herself and is starting to figure out who she really is. I thought there were a lot of hot guys in Stalk Me, and there were. But seriously, it only gets better. I think if there were ever a limit for the amount of hot guys allowed in one book, Jillian would definitely exceed it, and I am more than okay with that. She doesn't just write in a lot of hot guys, but she makes them all believable and soooo easy to fall in love with. I don't know if it's possible for anybody to just love one for the entire book.
I really loved how it started right where Stalk Me left off, there weren't any annoying recaps that I'm not really a fan of. Also, at first I was hesitant on my mom reading KC, I thought it would be kind of awkward, but I do kind of think reading the same books has started to bring us closer and I wouldn't have it any other way! I wouldn't think twice about recommending any of these books to my friends. And if you haven't already, I suggest picking it up right away.

This book I was Team Dawson

When I started reading this, it was hard for me to understand all the characters but as I got through to the middle I understood and got to know them all. There is alot of brand new characters that you learn about in this second book. The first book was really good, this book you learn alot about Keatyn because shes having to start her life over. The one stalker shows up in the book a couple times and its pretty scary. My heart was racing through it.
The only thing that started driving me crazy is when shes talking about Aiden and the God of All Hotties. She uses that too excessively in my opinion. It was ok for the first few times but she just says it over and over.
Throughout the book I went back and forth to Dawson and Aiden on who I like best for Keatyn. They are both really sweet guys. But I like Dawson more because he is more sweet and treats Keatyn right the whole time. He makes her the happiest I think. So I am Team Dawson through it all. I may change my mind through the next book but as of this one I am Team Dawson.
So far I am really loving this series. This is only the second book, but I cant wait to find out what Dawson and Aiden and Keatyn do next.

I can't deny it. I'm a KC groupie. I'm even in a Keatyn Chronicles discussion group. There are theories flying around all over the place about "WHO WILL KEATYN END UP WITH???" Well, we have a long way to go before we find that out. In the meantime...I'm enjoying all these yummy guys she gets to choose from.

While Keatyn's indecisiveness in Stalk Me, drove me nuts, it didn't seem to bother me much in this one. Maybe it's because of DAWSON. Oh my, Dawson. I wasn't sure I could love anyone more than Cush for Keatyn, but I sure was wrong. Now, in true Keatyn fashion, she "thinks" she wants Aiden, but really...Dawson is the perfect guy for her. However, Dawson is also a bit uncertain. He's a bit stuck on his ex or like Keatie, thinks he is. Once Keatyn and Dawson spend more time together though, they can't deny that they have strong feelings for each other. I love Dawson and Keatyn together and will admit that I will be a bit crushed if they don't end up together. The only one that would make it "ok", would be if she ended up with Damien. I know...you're all shocked that I'd pick the rocker.

We still have the stalker to worry about in this book. Plus, we get to see a small blip of Cush, Damien, and Brooklyn. Urgh, Brooklyn. I missed her parents in this book. Although, we do see them in bits and I really love her talks with Tommy. The cast of characters continues to entertain me. The group definitely provides a winning combination. They are funny, swoony, and are certain to provide teenage angst.

Whether you like Dawson, Cush, Damien, Riley, Dallas, Aiden, or Brooklyn...one thing remains; WHO is Moon Boy??? I have a guess and I can't wait to see if I'm right. For now, hang in there members of the KC Club. Date Me's release is right around the corner! I can't wait!!!!

Worth every penny

I purchased this after hearing from a friend about it. I had previously listened to Lone Survivor, read American Sniper, No Easy Day and Fearless. I had high expectations for this and I was not disappointed. You are drawn into the story and even get to hear some from the wife's of the fallen. As a Marine I have such high respect for our men and women of the armed forces and those of the SOF community. It was worth every penny!

Beautiful Examples of Our Christian Heritage

It is amazing and inspiring to read the sermons from the revolutionary era and to see the firm stand these men of God took on the Bible and ethics. They loved their Lord and their country with great passion. There is much wisdom here that is an example that we moderns should emulate. We would do well to take another look on the principles of our founders.

I would recommend the hard cover edition at this time, however. This product as it stands should get five stars for content. However, at this time the Kindle edition is very difficult to follow in some places because of the fact that the footnotes scroll over and are sometimes incorporated within the text. So it is hard to follow. I am told this is going to be reformatted and I look forward to replacing the one I have.

Photos are poor, the table of contents is not straightforward, and it's a very short book. I also got a free book on chest exercises that's a million times better than this. If you're going to sell eBooks, you need high quality, and I should know being an Kindle author myself.
