Hip, violent and funny vignettes of the mean streets of southeast London tie together this rowdy set of short novels by Bruen (The Guards), a modern Irish master of the hard-boiled. Collecting A White Arrest (1998), Taming the Alien (1999) and The McDead (2000) for first U.S. publication, this omnibus showcases the investigations of the aging Chief Inspector Roberts and the brutish Detective Sergeant Brant, with the assistance of the unlucky-in-love Woman Police Constable Falls. They don't always solve their assigned crimes, but know perfectly well if they can nail the occasional major criminal-"the white arrest"-they'll be able to keep their jobs. Among numerous subplots, they pursue a serial killer stalking England's winning soccer team, a vigilante gang hanging drug dealers and a hit man known as "The Alien" because he whacked a victim engrossed in the video of that movie with a baseball bat just as the monster pops out of John Hurt's chest. But quieter moments, such as Brant's visit to his home county in Ireland, are just as interesting. Bruen's relentless media references (to pop songs, noir movies, other crime novels, even H.P. Lovecraft and Jack Kerouac) may drive some readers to distraction, and his loose, ironic endings no doubt are too postmodern for traditional tastes. This is fun reading, though, for readers seeking something fresh.

Bringing together three short novels first published in Britain--A White Arrest (1998), Taming the Alien (1999), and The McDead (2000)--this paperback finds the past-hard-boiled Bruen unleashing a chaos of cops and robbers in southeast London. While chasing killers with generic names such as "the Umpire" and "the Alien," Chief Inspector Roberts and Detective Sergeant Brant dream of a "White Arrest" that will salvage their faltering careers; black WPC (Woman Police Constable) Falls looks for love and her place in the white, macho police force. Brief trips to America by Brant and the Alien provide Bruen with some comic fodder as his hard-as-nails Brits mock the Yanks for their lumbering obviousness and goodwill. The Morse-code delivery, the casually horrific violence, and the completely corrupt milieu prompt easy but not completely accurate references to Bruen as an Irish Ellroy. Ellroy's stories have grand structures and hidden moral centers, while Bruen's take sometimes frustrating left turns with no clear rationale. This stuff smokes like cordite, but it blows a hole in your stomach instead of filling your belly. Keir Graff

Which is worse, being apprehended by Chief Inspector Roberts and Detective Sergeant Brant or having to work with them?

These three "novella" length books are quick, action filled, totally un-PC, and very humorous. The main characters, Chief Inspector John Roberts and Detective Sergeant Tom Brant are, to say the least, two peas from the same unconventional method of police work pod. While CI Roberts tries to do things according to the book, with lapses here and there if it means collaring a perp, DS Brant is...well, I'll let the author tell you: "Brant was like a pit-bull. You saw him and the word 'pugnacious' leapt to mind. It fitted. His hair was in galloping recession and what remained was cut to the skull. Dark eyes over a nose that had been broken at least twice. A full sensual mouth that hinted at gentility if not gentleness. Neither applied. He was 5' 8" and powerfully built. Not from the gym but rather from a smoldering rage. Over a drink he'd admit: 'I was born angry and got worse.' " Over a drink? More likely three and counting. Both Brant and Roberts, forever on the outs with their superior, Superintendent Brown, drink heavily (except when they're on duty, during which they only drink whenever they're near a pub in the pursuit of justice). The higher ups at the Southeast branch of the London Metropolitan Police Force wish they'd go away, or get caught doing something illegal that would get them sacked. Not bloody well likely.

Well, I think that someone who enjoys reading entertaining, fast-paced, noir police procedural books set in the seamy side of London will thoroughly enjoy THE WHITE TRILOGY. If, after finishing these fun stories about the adventures of Roberts and Brant, you need more, author Ken Bruen has continued their unorthodox style of apprehending the bad guys and gals in the "Inspector Brant" series: BLITZ, VIXEN, CALIBRE, and AMMUNITION. You'll have to read them in order so you will understand what's going on when R&B refer to a previous incident or person. I highly recommend them all. 5 Stars

Excellent crime fiction

I read this omnibus featuring DS Tom Brant and co. in about a day and a half. There are seven books in the series in total and I am at book six already. The the first three stories in this edition are set in 1990's SE London and follow the cops at the Met and we see their everyday working life of bribery, in office fighting, politics, racism, bigotry and street crime. Tom Brant, the lead character in this series represents all that is wrong with society in being a raging hard ass homophobe and racist yet the author gives him some redemptive qualities. That's why this series works with him in it. The storyline features some extreme cases of human degradation and makes some social criticisms about the media and the public's consumption with violence and man's other vices like greed. There's a couple of jabs at the government but nothing preachy. All the characters are flawed, making them believable. The pace is fast thanks to the multiple story lines throughout to keep you interested. These are not lengthy novels and are addictive reads. I love this series and love Brant as well. The bonus for readers who read Ken Bruen is the writers he quotes at the top of each chapter. Bruen lives and breathes crime fiction and he has a poetic style that is wonderful to read. His voice is immersive and dark and harsh in imparting the truth about society's ills. I love it.

Funny,sad and violent could only scratch the surface of Mr.Bruen and his world.This trilogy are indeed crime dramas but below there is a scathing commentary on the pathos of human frailties.It's characters are almost universally lonely and flawed either with booze ,self loathing or loneliness.Those are just the good guys.Why read it? The answer is Mr.Bruen holds up a mirror to each of us and when we stop laughing at the protagonists,we see ourselves. Clowns ,Killers and maniacs populate this" London Patch" and their actions will keep you reading long into the night.This author is talented both as a writer and poet.Thank you Ken.

Great mystery series!

Good mysteries with excellent character development. I was able to feel like I knew Jennifer,and liked her, as well as cheering her on as she tried to solve each mystery. Romance included,on a very high moral plane.Highly recommended.

Very engaging. Could have easily become a television series.

I really enjoyed the story lines. The characters were well developed and true to the author's form, you could easily imagine yourself right there in the story. This series could have been easily adapted for television. I gave four stars in stead of five because I think the stories could have been filled out a little more. These were definitely on the short story side of literature and they could have easily each been a full novel on there own.

Extremely Superficial Treatment and Very Short

This booklet is *very* short - in fact, this could best be called magazine article length more than a book.

The booklet starts from a VERY basic place - assuming apparently that you've never even heard of recycling when you start reading. It gives a list of 6 very commonsense things to do to recycle [such as "recycle soda and beer cans"]. The advice is VERY basic. It says that you can "earn money" recycling these things, but then it gives you no information on how to actually earn money. [I recycle everything I possibly can and I have not ever earned money doing it].

If you have never, ever even heard of recycling and don't have even the faintest clue that it exists, this book will give you very low level information on what it is and what items you can recycle. Beyond that, you won't get anything out of this book.

Yorkshire Then and Now

An elderly widow watching a churchyard, a stuffy police superintendent stuck in a convalescent home, a vengeful vicar's son, several "upper-crustians," suspicious meetings in a pub, and a gang of criminal Asians, populate a village outside Bradford in Yorkshire. Inspector Blake Hartley and his Muslim assistant, Sergeant Ibrahim Khan plod through the clues that began to appear with a body dumped on the grave of a young soldier who died in Calcutta in 1857. They soon discover that the antiques trade is being supplied from local parish robberies, and that their shipment to Phoenix, Arizona ties the business to the laundering of drug money. And drugs abound. There seems to be little hope that Keighworth will return to its peaceful rural state. Ruin and rubbish have overtaken the community like the plague.

The septuagenarian author is a non-stipendiary priest, and lives in the real town of Keighly, near Bradford. His hero Hartley also happens to serve as a local vicar. Much attention is given in this procedural to the best and worst of men of the church. Meanwhile, a competent woman is advancing in the force. A great deal of attention is given to racism, but references to Pakistanis as "Asians" may be confusing to American readers. More confusing, events unfold as if they happened sometime in the past. I first thought the novel was set in the 1980s, but it came out in 2005. That is about the time that the U.K. was dealing with extreme violence perpetrated by Islamic terrorists, who had formed a network from London to the north of England, including Bradford. Against that reality the reverend-detective's traditional Yorkshire dialect and vocabulary are charming respite, and perhaps a statement of the author that he would prefer to hold on to the past.

Nothing surprises me anymore, so I don't accept one critic's view that elements of the plot are "preposterous." I would only argue that even sweet Yorkshire-men will not be able to see stars and planets shining over modern-day Phoenix.

Great quick moving mystery

I enjoy the Inspector Blake Hartley mysteries. They are fast-paced and include lively characters. It's interesting to watch how Blake and his sidekick work for a boss with whom they don't get along. It's also promising to see how Christian (Hartley) and Muslim (sidekick) religious backgrounds can coexist.
The Graveyard Mystery is the fourth in the series. To explain the plot in a sentence: A corpse is found in a graveyard, objects from local churches are stolen, and someone has set up a police officer.
If you like interesting, non-gruesome mysteries that stick to the plot and revolve around fun characters, give this series a try.

I just had Dr. McGrath as an instructor and he is the most arrogant disrespectful person I have ever met. He has a chip on his shoulder and does not treat people with respect. Both times I had him as an instructor I reported his lack of respect and the school assigned me different instructors. Hopefully the school looks into the complaint more in depth this time.

Loved it

Loved the characters, and can see how their personalities and stories could be developed in a series. The time period is interesting, and not explored as often as some other eras. Although the screen play took liberties with Fitzgerald's novel, it seemed to remain true to the original for the most part. Also found it interesting that some of the issues explored in the film (i.e., salary inequality, women's position in the work place, homelessness) are still issues today. And there's nothing not to love about Matt Bomer - such a good choice for Monroe, Would love to see the pilot made into a series to see more character development and relationships.

King of Hollywoodland.

The following review of The Last Tycoon refers to the 1969 hardcover edition, published by Scribner's and edited by Edmund Wilson.

The Last Tycoon by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a work of fiction but its protagonist, the enigmatic Monroe Stahr bears more than a passing resemblance to real life Hollywood icon Irving Thalberg. Thalberg was an enormously influential producer who took Hollywood by storm only to die at the tender age of 37. Quite ironically, F. Scott Fitzgerald died suddenly at the age of 44 while writing The Last Tycoon. One can only speculate as to how powerful this novel might have been had Fitzgerald lived long enough to complete and further refine the already wonderfully compelling narrative.
We know from the very interesting notes written by the author and presented as a supplement to the text of this unfinished novel that Fitzgerald did not approach the creation of The Last Tycoon lightly. This was a labor undertaken with meticulous attention to plot and character development. Specific scenes were crafted to create just the right mood or get across to the reader just the right message. One would be hard pressed to name another book about the rough and tumble world of Hollywood that contains the degree of nuance found in The Last Tycoon.
One of the most remarkable aspects of this work is the empathy Fitzgerald shows toward his fictional creation, the larger than life producer Monroe Stahr. As a noted author who found himself laboring over movie scripts in an era when such work was considered demeaning for real artists, one would have expected Fitzgerald to display a more cynical, less complimentary view of the movie production overlords of the 1930s....most of whom were semiliterate at best. On the contrary, Stahr is presented as a complex, supremely capable and kind individual who, though lacking in formal education, knows his business inside and out.
The Last Tycoon is first and foremost about Monroe Stahr but the narration is provided by Cecelia Brady, a young woman who admires Stahr and is not so secretly in love with him. In the very first chapter, Fitzgerald has Cecelia say the following: "It's more than possible that some of the pictures Stahr himself conceived had shaped me into what I was." After reading that line, I had to wonder if Cecelia was speaking for just herself and Stahr or for all of us and Hollywood in general.
Though unfinished, The Last Tycoon is an important, thought provoking book. Highly recommended.

Gorgeous Coralie-Bickford Smith cover art!

I purchased all six of these books from the Canadian Amazon website (amazon.ca) several weeks ago because I couldn't bear to wait any longer for them to show up on the American site.

The covers are just gorgeous. The art is metallic and beautiful and the covers have a soft feel to them. The inside flap of the cover is perforated and is designed to be removed and used as a matching bookmark.

The cover art for this set of F. Scott Fitzgerald books was designed by Coralie Bickford-Smith - the genius behind the similarly beautiful Penguin cloth-bound classics series. Not only is the literature itself classic, but the books look like a classic collector's item as well! Friends compliment me on them all the time when they see them on my bookcase!
