My almost 12 year old son read this book for his summer book review project (prior to 6th grade). This is his review:

Seanchai, an elf is living in a world in which human rule, dwarves hide in the mountains and elves are slaves. Seanchai is trying to recreate a great alliance between men, elves and dwarves in the land of Odessiya. The emperor does not want Seanchai to recreate the alliance and sends out men to attack Seanchai and his companions. Seanchai takes safe harbor with a woman named Mhari who teaches him the ways of Wycaan's. Mhari is the last of the Wycaan's. They are great masters of magic and great storytellers. His friends are captured at the walls of Galbrieth. Seanchai and Mhari go and save them and take down the garrison. In this book, Seanchai successfully recreates part of the alliance. In the next book, he will hopefully bring the dwarves to join the alliance.

At the Walls of Galbrieth teaches you about the good and bad things in life. I think Seanchai is an interesting character, because he always has to choose between his friends and his destiny but no matter what anyone tells him he always chooses his friends. I like this book because each and every one of its characters have their own secrets. I like this book because it fills you with curiosity and you never know what will happen next. This medieval fantasy story is filled with action, suspense, and adventure, it is entertaining and interesting, and it teaches about friendship, and loyalty. I couldn't put it down.

Engaging, a great read

A refreshing start to a new series, I truly enjoyed reading 'At the walls of Galbrieth'. I bought the book as it fell into the 'Elf' category and I have a penchant for books involving elves. I wasn't disappointed! Very well written and the character development was well done. It's a book about one particular elf who will become a Wiccan master and who has been deigned the 'one' who will unite dwarf, human and elf in a fight against the empire. I find with most reviews that no 'Synopsis' is forthcoming and sometimes when I am looking for a book on Amazon kindle, I read the reviews to try and find out what the story line is supposed to be. The reason is that sometimes the book synopsis is so vague that one doesn't know what the book is actually about. This was an enjoyable read, engrossing, gripping and hard to put down. I liked the character development which was well laid out and I look forward to reading the next book in the series. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who likes books involving elves and the other races of man and who like a good fast paced read. A definite read for 'Elf' buffs. Very enjoyable. E.K.

Clean, simple, easy story

The title basically says it all. I would give it 3.5 stars if I could. Nice characters, some of who could have used a little more development. All in all, I kept reading, which is always a very good sign. Interesting theme and philosophy. Very well thought off, researched and expressed. The only "drawback" for me would be the feeling that this story seemed to have been written by more than one writer. Some parts have an acquired maturity others are lacking. The dialogue seems to have been written by a way younger/less experienced person than some of the narrated parts which in turn hold more philosophical contexts. But, all in all, a more than agreeable read. I will certainly be on the lookout for book two.

Not always the "Kitchen Clone" but worth the purchase price.

I collect cookbooks. I have everything from THE JOY OF COOKING, THE I HATE TO COOK BOOK and everything in between. This is a gem! The recipes in this book don't always taste like the product they are modeled on, but they come very close.
The KFC cole slaw recipe is great. But here's a hint. Mix up a double batch of the dressing and put it in a squeeze bottle. Then run how much every cabbage and carrots you want for the slaw needed and add the how much of the dressing you like.
It is a great book, and while I haven't (and won't) tried them all -lets face it, if I want a Big Mac, I'll go to McDonalds- I have ordered the other books in he series.

Good Receipies for a different dinner

I am always looking for something differnent to cook. I get tired of meatloaf and pasta. This book is great on those days when I have that adventurous feeling. The Planet Hollywood Chicken strips (breaded in captin crunch) were great. Some other receipies came very close not exact, but very close.

About the Author
Cold Crossover is Tom Kelly’s first step into fiction and the first of the Ernie Creekmore series. The second book in the series, Hovering Above a Homicide, will be released in Spring, 2013.

let down by laziness?

The new mystery "Cold Crossover" nicely presents the feel and flavor of a particular corner of the Pacific Northwest. Unfortunately for the reader the feel and flavor are of the 1980s, whereas the book is prominently set in 2005 (Each chapter begins with date and time). The mismatch between time and place so clang and clash throughout the book that the story fairly clunks along. In some places the mismatch only annoys, such as the "bulky word processors" newly installed on the desks of the Seattle "Tribune" newspaper, the everyday Datsun sedans, front wheel drive minivans as a subject of scorn, long and tangled telephone cords, Cher as the star of the hour, newfangled MRI technology. In other parts the mismatch frustrates the plotting. The prime example revolves around cell phones, or the lack thereof (heck, this story appears to pre-date fax machines. Also absent are iPods, internet, ATMs, DVDs, laptops, SUVs, coffeeshops, reality TV, among many). OK, it might make for a "character" to have the main man eschew a cell phone, but when almost the entire book focuses on the search for a missing 20-something washed-up basketball hero and no one--not even a national celebrity detective--thinks to locate or ping this guy's cell, it just doesn't work anymore. As the pages turn more and more people go missing, but never are cell records or locations sought. Instead there's lots of driving hither and thither to meet folks, seek clues, sample the local pastries (all this does the give the author, who clearly knows the area, nice opportunities to present yet more local flavor). Oh the semi-famous detective has a cell phone, as do some of the real estate colleagues of the main character (he's an English teacher-basketball coach-real estate salesman) but the phones are never in evidence, never of importance other than as a joke. A couple of other time-and-place frustrations include the still-viable local lumber business (pretty much wiped out in the area by environmental concerns in the 1980s and 90s) and the teen-years flashback of the main character (it reads like the 1950s but works out to the '70s if anyone bothers to do the math). OK, maybe all this mismatch bothers me overmuch because I grew up in the Northwest in the 1970s and '80s and returned in the 2000s; relatives still live smack in the middle of Skagit County where the mystery takes place. But the fact that the local flavor is done well--a comment of several reviewers--detracts all the more because the flavor doesn't ring true to the purported time. It's the flavor of 1980-something, not 2005. What I figure is that the author dug up a manuscript from his days at the Seattle Times in the 80s (what reporter doesn't have a novel or two lying about?) and slipped in a mention of cell phones here, an email there, and the Seahawks, Mariners, and Supersonics (once each) to repurpose it all as a mystery set in 2005. The author has a strong sense of place and knows his way around the page, so I can only attribute the mismatch of time and place and plot to laziness--he just didn't take the time to properly update his characters and setting. Simpler yet might have been to set the thing in 1985 or so. That way all the pay phones and VHS tapes, VW vans and station wagons, French films, and newly arrived Californians would've been right at home. One is left to wonder why. In the end it reduces the effort to a "nice" local story, a simple one-thing-happens-after-another piece, rather than a real whodunnit to puzzle out. To this reader unfortunately that's the real mystery here.

Overdone obsession

The situation was interesting but the weaving of present day and historical events was confusing. This is a difficult thing to do and I found myself frequently going back to remember character and family names from the past. I am not a sports fan and found it difficult to believe that a single basketball game from five years earlier affected so many events in the present but perhaps that's just me.

Real Estate Maven's First Novel Is a Winner

When a town is as obsessed with winning the state basketball championship as is the fictional Washington state community of North Fork, the outcome can be tragic, as Tom Kelly graphically demonstrates in his debut mystery, "Cold Crossover".

"Cold Crossover" is the first of a series featuring Ernie Creekmore, is a mystery/thriller that combines the colorful history of Skagit County, north of Seattle and including several islands in Puget Sound, with present day real estate realities. Once the state's premier small community basketball coach, with 19 years on the job -- whose team almost won the 2000 state title -- five years after his star player missed a shot and lost the title, Creekmore is one of several agents selling vacation properties and year-round residences, mostly in the Lake Wilhelmina area of the county. (Don't look for these places on any map; they're fictional. I'm guessing North Fork is a stand-in for Mount Vernon, the real county seat of Skagit County).

Along the way, Creekmore starts to adjust to the death in childbirth of his beloved wife Cathy. As the book ends, we see a possible, even probable romantic interest for the old-school coach/real estate agent. How old school? The guy doesn't even have a cell phone, for goodness sakes! Can you imagine a real estate agent without at least one cell phone? And his choice of vehicles -- an old VW Bus and a 1963 International Travelall -- reflect his old school practicality. He inherited the truck from his fruit-growing dad in Yakima. For those not familiar with this latter vehicle, think Jeep Cherokee, the full-size version without the fake wood, or Chevrolet Suburban. Ernie Creekmore is an easy-to-like protagonist and "Cold Crossover" is a very well written debut novel.

Little Bit Of Dull Story Lost In Huge Amount Of Dull Sex.

I read the first three books, one after the other, and loved them. They had borderline too much sex per story, but it was easy enough to skim past to the stories when the sex scenes got a bit too long. They were well written sex scenes, but I prefer that more weight be given to the plot and less to the sex scenes.

I was eager to read this book with Broc's story because I enjoyed the first three so much, but it was a huge disappointment. The book was one long, tedious sex scene after another with hardly any plot. It was almost as if the minuscule storyline was was interrupting the sex scenes.

The beginning was extremely promising. Broc is sitting in a forest mourning his dead dog, when a stray dog appears and they begin to bond. Since Broc's dog had been so significant in the first three stories, the appearance of a new dog seemed to foreshadow an engaging plot. Sure enough, the dog's owner, a beautiful English woman, appears searching for her dog. Broc's history predisposes him to dislike the English, so having an English heroine for Broc has the potential for a highly entertaining storyline.

This first meeting between Broc and Elizabet seems to bear out the belief that this will be a delightful story. Broc is instantly smitten and Elizabet finds Broc to be very attractive, after her initial fears are assuaged. The dialogue sparkles and we can see that Elizabet will lead Broc on a merry chase and leave him feeling pole-axed. Then a comedy of errors occurs when someone in Elizabet's party tries to kill her with an arrow. Broc pushes her away and grabs her. Neither Elizabet nor the rest of her party realize what happened, Broc knocks her brother out, she thinks Broc killed him, and Broc abducts her until he can get her to safety and explain what happened. After that, everything fell apart and the book became one looooong borrrrrrring sex scene after another, with nothing much happening in-between. If Broc and Elizabet weren't thinking about sex, talking about sex, or having sex, the heroes and heroines from the previous stories were. Oi! Makes the reader think the Middle Ages consisted of nothing but horny men and women spending all of their time either copulating or thinking about copulating.

I realize a lot of readers like the long sex scenes in some of Crosby's books, but I prefer more story and less sex. Broc's story had a lot of potential and this one did a disservice to his character; it could have been so much more than it was. Not recommended.

Six years have passed since her cousin and best friend Mary was murdered. Sarah Woodward still feels guilty over abandoning Mary after her cousin married Peter Holland. Though there is no solid evidence, Sarah is convinced that Peter killed his spouse, which, in turn, led to the blinding of their child from flying glass during the incident.
When Peter advertises for an instructor to a blind child, Sarah sees this as the opportunity to investigate her beloved Mary's murder. When Sarah meets Peter, she is shocked by the depth of emotiom he feels for his son, and the degree of guilt and loneliness he feels over Mary's death. She is even more astonished to find herself falling in love with a person she has been demonizing since 1880. To Peter's amazement, the arrival of Mary has pulled him out of the depths of despair and given him new hope. However, if Peter did not kill Mary, someone else did and they still lurk in the shadows, perhaps regarding Sarah as their next target.
PERFECT IN MY SIGHT is a brilliantly scribed American gothic that brings to life late nineteenth century New York. The lead characters brilliantly portray a pair of guilt-laden individuals, who find a second chance with the other. The historical story line blends elements of suspense and romance into a gothic setting that could only have scribed by a terrific talent like Tanya Anne Crosby.

Contemporary Latin America presents the epochal changes in the cultures, governments, economies and societies of Latin America at a critical moment in the region’s history. Beginning in 1970, a decade before the tumultuous changes of the 1980s, Holden and Villars analyze the decline of the old era in order to fully highlight the significance of later developments.

The authors identify the central tendency of these changes as liberalization or openness, and present them in the context of the Latin American nations’ rich history both as overseas kingdoms of the Spanish and Portuguese monarchies, and as self-emancipated republics. They emphasize the global, national and local dimensions of the region’s recent past, while highlighting the persistence of deep-seated historical legacies that have continued to shape contemporary Latin America.

Each chapter is divided into sections covering relevant pre-1970s trends, post-1970s trends and the particular experiences of individual countries. The book focuses on “Ibero-America” – Brazil and the eighteen countries that were formerly Spanish possessions – while offering valuable comparative views of the non-Iberian areas of the Caribbean.

Holden clearly identifies the problems faced by Latin American countries attempting to democratize. He has researched and identified barriers to democracy in every Latin American country and leads the reader into further research of social, political, and economic problems.
