Unexpected!
By Jen
At $3.99 this book is a bargain. I wasn't sure what to expect, but the blurb caught me and I am very pleased with the result.

Maggie and Alex are both Detective Inspectors in London, but don't let this fool you. This is novel has very little to do with their jobs and everything to do with their relationship. Immediately we are introduced to the tension and animosity between these two women. They are polar opposites in many respects. So once again don't expect anything do with police procedure.

This book reads very fast and is incredibly fun. I never once felt like it bogged down. From the moment the plane went down I was completely hooked and honestly I think my favorite part was the middle third of the book as these women fought for survival. Alex was especially amazing and I loved her stubborn drive to survive against all odds. I thought that the author handled the romance between the characters very well and their relationship developed realistically. There are a few "hot" scenes for those interested in such things. *wink*

I don't have many complaints. I think the editing was good and honestly only noticed a few mistakes. Nothing that I would call overly distracting though. I wasn't in love with the epilogue, but perhaps that is just me. For whatever reason it just didn't click. In fact would have been fine if it just ended at last chapter. But like I said it could just be me, I doubt most will have a problem with it.

I definitely recommend buying this one. I think it would have been worth it at $9.99 so at the price it is a fantastic bargain. Lastly the best thing I can say about this novel is that at about 1/3 of the way through I took a break to buy the author's second book. I was that impressed. Lyn Gardner is on my radar. 4/5

Highly Recommended Read
By Anjoka
Set against a back drop of survival, this tale involves two very strong minded characters fighting to survive their own mounting feelings for each other. There's not much that they can do about the situation they find themselves in, but battling their own emotions could prove to be more damaging than the snow storm that has trapped them.

The author has done a fine job in setting out the two characters personalities early on, so that we can understand their reactions to situations as they arise. The pace of the story telling is compelling, drawing the reader into the story from the start, so that it's difficult to put the book down, and you find you don't want to. You become invested in the characters and want to see how they cope, not just with the survival aspect, but also with their inner emotions.

Descriptively, the author also hits the right note, by not dwelling on too much descriptive imagery, that can sometimes be too distracting, but keeps it to a necessary level, showing the reader, rather than telling them, of what is going on. This gives the reader the feeling they are actually watching the scenes being played out in front of them.

Ultimately, it's a story of survival and unrequited love that finally wins the battle over both. But what will happen when they are rescued?

I leave that for you to find out.

A highly recommended read & I look forward to more from this author!

Excellent romance
By Telstar
Maggie Campbell and Alex Blake are both Detective Inspectors with the Metropolitan Police Service in London. England. They had worked together on a kidnapping case three years earlier. Although the case had a good outcome, the outcome for both Maggie and Alex was not good.

Maggie is a by the book, black is black and white is white detective. Alex is somewhat more of a hothead with a disregard for rules and regulations. She will do whatever it takes to solve a case, using threats of violence if necessary. This of course, doesn't go down too well with Maggie. But this isn't the sole cause of Maggie and Alex having a fight. Maggie is fighting inappropriate feelings for Alex. Feelings she thinks she shouldn't be having. She's never been attracted to a woman before and has no idea how to handle it. So Maggie provokes a fight. The fight results in suspensions for both women.

Three years go past, both Maggie and Alex take great pains to avoid one another like the plague. That is until the day comes when Interpol requests the services of Maggie and Alex to act as decoys. All they have to do is to take a plane ride, destination unknown.

Unfortunately, nothing is simple and tragically their plane crashes in the middle of nowhere in a raging blizzard. Their pilot is killed. Maggie is really sick and Alex is injured. Alex has to fight against all odds to find a way to keep them both alive. Will she succeed?

This book was an unexpected gem of a find. It was really well written and an absolute page turner from the first page right through to the very last. I simply couldn't put this down until I knew the outcome.

This is a story of survival against a back drop of ice and freezing temperatures. The scenic descriptions had me shivering although I was cosy and warm in my home.

I loved both these characters, they are multidimensional and a delight to get to know. I particularly liked the way they set out hating each other. But out of hate as many know, comes love. I often feel there is a fine line between the two emotions. This is really well portrayed here.

It was a pleasure to read as Maggie and Alex's story unfolded. They interacted so well together, even when they hated each other. The few other minor characters add to the story to progress it forward to it's conclusion.

Then of course, there is the romance. Slow and burning until it comes to the boil. Then it's hot, sizzling, smoking hot.

The story wasn't predictable to me. I liked the tension throughout and the way the book concluded. I like to have all the ends tied up and they were. Although I have to say, I'd dearly love to see these characters again. They have a lot more they can say.

Lyn Gardner is a terrific new author. I'm looking forward to her next book eagerly.

This is a definite re-read, a keeper and will join the rest of the books in my favorites folder.

Plato was mentored by Socrates and much of his writings were based off of dialogues between Socrates and others. Plato also was the teacher of many philosophers with the most famous amongst them being Arisotle.

Laying down the law
By FrKurt Messick
When one thinks of Plato and his ideas of politics, one naturally gravitates toward his best-known work, the Republic. In that book, Plato set up the ideal city-state, with classes born and bred to specific functions and roles in society, and a sense of philosophical outlook consistent across the board. However, such a society was unlikely to be brought out, in Plato's time and, as it turned out, in any other.

Plato tried at different times to persuade rulers to become his envisioned philosopher-king; the last attempt was with a tyrant of Syracuse, who in the end imprisoned Plato rather than following his directions. Plato wrote this work, 'The Laws', as the last of his dialogues. Its difference from the Republic is immediately apparent in the absence of Socrates as a character - Plato at the end of his life has finally taken to working in his own right and not through a proxy.

Just looking at the contents will show the breadth of this work - it involves practically every aspect of civil society: legislative bodies (and Plato has some scathing commentaries on some that he has known); education and its proper role and method (including even drinking parties as part of the educational process); ideas of monarchy, democracy, and the balance of power (some American constitutional ideas were generated from a reading (and occasional misreading) of this work); civil administration; arts and sciences; military and sports training; sexual conduct; economics; criminal law, torts, and judicial process; religion and theology; civil law, property and family law; Plato even argues for the need of a 'nocturnal council', one that delves not only into the practical aspects of the law, but also their philosophical bases.

According to translator and editor Trevor Saunders, 'The reader of the Republic who picks up the Laws is likely to have difficulty in believing that the same person wrote both.' Saunders speculates that Plato in his older years changed from optimism to pessimism, from idealism to realism, but that this is not all there is to the assumption, because in actual fact the transition from the Republic to the Laws involves transitioning unattainable ideals to attainable realities.

Plato describes the construction of a utopian society in great detail, down to the number of citizens permitted to live in the city (5040) and the length of time foreigners might reside in the city (20 years). This shows that Plato considers politics to be an exact science (indeed, despite the inclusion of the 'nocturnal council', he did see his system of laws being essentially unalterable through history). Plato is not averse to the use of force and coercion to set up and maintain the utopian society. Finally, Plato sees a self-contained kind of society that is likely to become xenophobic to the extreme, with less tolerance toward its own citizens than toward those foreigners permitted to live and work in the city. Indeed, for the virtuous citizens to be free to pursue their virtue, the majority of the manual work and crafts must be done by a worker class composed of slaves or immigrant workers, or both.

Plato's Laws suffer from much greater criticism in the modern world than the Republic, in part because it is a more 'realistic' work, with a reality that no longer applies. However, many of his insights are worthwhile, and the overall structure of his society reflected in the Laws is worth discussion as much as is that of the Republic. One of the problems with this work vis-a-vis the Republic is its length (the Laws is considerable longer); another problem is that it lacks the dramatic reading possible from the Republic, rather the difference between a political debate and a legal seminar. Still, it is an important work, showing how Plato's thought had shifted in his lifetime.

Foundational to the study of the history of political and philosophic thought
By Jesse Rouse
This is not an exciting book. It is not fun to read, and you will probably be tempted to stop reading in many times as you slog through it. But it is an incredibly important book, one that needs to be read. And it is worth reading, despite the effort it takes. This translation by Trevor Saunders is somewhat disappointing, but it is the best that I have seen. It is too modernized in many places. I am very annoyed when he has Plato saying things like "Bon Voyage" or "poppycock." I fail to see why this is necessary at all.

The book itself is split into twelve books. The first deals with the inadequacy of the current political systems in Athens and Sparta. Plato rejects both complete democracy and oligarchy. He moves on to discuss the educational benefits of drinking parties, which is one of his most eccentric ideas.

Book two deals with the educational purpose of the arts, and continues to support his drinking parties. In this section Plato shows that he very much supports censorship by the state.

Book three in a lesson in history. First Plato gives the history of mankind (which is rather interesting), and then he gives his history of political systems, showing how monarchy, oligarchy, and democracy arose, and how they changed over time.

Book four begins to discuss how the colony that they will be creating will work. It discussus the supremacy of Law, and how we should legislate.

Book five gives the preamble to the laws, and discusses personal morality, emotion, the distribution of land, monetary systems, and classes of citizens.

Book six lists all of the positions which will need to exist (i.e. police officers, judges, etc.), and how courts will work. He then moves into a discussion of marriage, which he purposely selects as the first thing to legislate because he considered it foundational to the state.

Book seven outlines Plato's ideas about education, going through various disciplines and discussing what should be taught. There is a rather humerous section where he is discussing what literature should be taught. He concludes that the book he is currently writing is by far the greatest literature ever produced, and should thus be the only required reading. Such a humble man he was.

Book eight deals with sports, the military, sexual conduct, agriculture, economics, and foreign trade (which he strongly discourages).

Book nine lists crimes which merit capital punishment, distinguishes between voluntary and involuntary crimes, and deals with crimes committed in anger and cases of homicide by insane people. He also discusses some non-capital crimes like assault.

Book ten discussus religion, and attempts to prove three things. First, the gods exist. Second, they are active in the world and care for mankind. And third, that they cannot be persuaded by humans to change their minds. He also discussus impiety and punishments dealing with religion.

Book eleven deals with laws of property ownership, commercial law, family law, and many miscellaneous laws.

Book twelve has many more miscellaneous laws, and finishes with a section on the Nocturnal Council, which is a group of men who would have the power to update the laws in case some of them turned out to be impractical.

As you can see, Plato discussus an enormous amount of material. His breadth of knowledge is nothing short of amazing. His impact on the development of politics and philosophy cannot be underestimated, making this a book very much worth reading.

One final thing I want to comment on are the claims of those who say that this book, being the last that Plato wrote, shows that Plato had changed his mind about education and politics, since this book is far less idealistic than his discussion in the Republic. This is simply missing the purpose of each book. The Republic was discussing the ideal political system. The Laws was discussing the best reasistic political system. Plato's thought did not change (much), but rather the purpose of the two books was different.

Overall grade: A

Enjoyable and refreshing
By Joel Hartcher
This book is a must for anyone mildly interested in philosophy, greek history, and the beginnings of western culture.
We see in this work a much more matured Plato, than compared to the Republic.
I recommend this title for anyone who is tired of the modern semantic battles of todays philosophy and wants to get back to some good old thinking!

Remy Comeaux pulled up in front of the lavish Saint Charles Avenue mansion just before dark on Sunday evening. Nice digs, he thought as he took out his wallet and grabbed a few bills to tip the limo driver. Had he shown up in his beloved beat-up pickup truck, it might have been a little harder to crash the party. He wanted nothing to spoil the surprise he had planned for the guest of honor.

The last time he'd seen Lee Barnaby had been the day Katrina had roared into New Orleans, drowning Remy's hopes and dreams along with much of Crescent City. The night he'd lost Carlotta. His fiancée. His reason for living. His heart.

Lee had been only the deputy superintendent of police then. Not that most civilians or cops referred to him that way. In everyday matters, it was simply Chief or Deputy Chief. Tonight Barnaby was celebrating his rise to the top rung of the department. Remy was back in town to make sure his reign was short-lived.

Remy adjusted the uncomfortable silk cummerbund of his rented tux as he walked up the paved path toward the plantation-style home with its massive white pillars and wide verandas. Light spilled into the gathering twilight, and music and laughter drifted through the open doorway.

An aging, mustached butler stood sentinel at the heavy wood-and-etched-glass double doors. He scrutinized Remy for a few seconds, as if he were trying to place him. Evidently the limo and monkey suit were not enough to sell Remy as an invited guest.

"Good evening," Remy said. "Looks like I'm at the right place."

"Yes, sir. Can I have your name, sir?"

"Andre Comeaux," he said, using the first name of a cousin who just happened to be one of LSU's former legendary quarterbacks. "Just flew in from the West Coast. Wouldn't have missed this for the world."

"Yes, sir," the butler said, finally buying his act and flashing a welcoming smile. "Welcome to the Delacroix home."

"Thank you."

"Mrs. Delacroix requests that her guests gather in the ballroom at eight o'clock. Until then, the first floor of the house and the back gardens are at your disposal. Enjoy yourself."

"Thanks. I'm sure I will." Remy walked away as the next guests arrived and the butler went through his rehearsed spiel again.

It didn't take but a minute of wandering for Remy to realize that locating Lee Barnaby among the throng of guests in the sprawling house might not be as easy as he'd figured. A waiter passed with a tray of cocktails. Remy accepted a vodka martini. This was his first and no doubt his last foray into New Orleans old-money high society. He may as well partake of the perks.

He had to admit the house was impressive, though he couldn't imagine living here. Where would a man prop up his feet, pop a top and flick on the TV to watch a Saints game? Surely old man Delacroix had a man cave that was off-limits to Marilyn Delacroix's interior-design team.

Remy made the rounds from room to room, doing his best to remain inconspicuous as he scanned the partiers. He didn't come across Lee, but he recognized a few of the chief's pets from his old days with the department. The suck-ups who'd done Lee's bidding without question had no doubt moved right up the pay scale.

Amazingly, none of them recognized Remy, even though he practically ran into one of Lee's go-to cops from the pre-Katrina days. Charlie Gibbons had been the man who'd fastened the cuffs around his wrists the night Remy had been hauled off to jail.

Had he noticed Remy, he'd have no doubt raced to give Lee a heads-up that trouble was stalking the party scene. Fortunately, good old Charlie was far too engrossed in the cleavage of the woman draped across his shoulder to notice Remy.

Admittedly, Remy had changed a lot in eight years. He'd gained a few pounds—all muscle. Working out at a local gym and coaching a boxing team of underprivileged boys had become his grief-and-frustration outlet once he'd moved to Houston and started his own private detective agency.

He'd let the military haircut grow out. His nose, which had had been broken a couple of times playing football and again when he was a narc detective, had finally been straightened by an expert surgeon. And the boyish grin that Carlotta Worthing-ton had loved had been replaced by a wary, brooding edge—or so he'd been told.

He stepped into a spacious dining room with rows of tall windows that offered views of a meticulously tended English garden lit by what appeared to be strings of stars strung through the spreading branches of dozens of century-old live oak trees.

There were no chairs at the beautifully crafted antique mahogany dining table, but it and an equally impressive sideboard were laden with seafood. The oysters on the half shell looked too tasty to resist.

Remy had just slipped one between his lips when he felt a hand on his arm. He turned and looked into the deep violet eyes of one of the most stunning women he'd ever seen in his life, though she was likely twice his thirty-one years.

She smiled and moved her head just enough that her exquisite diamond earrings trapped the dazzling sparkles emanating from the multifaceted chandelier. "I'm Marilyn Delacroix. I don't believe we've met."

Remy smiled. "No, I don't believe we have. I'm an old friend of Lee's, but I don't get back to New Orleans often."

"You should make time. In spite of what you might hear, the city is almost as vibrant and lively as before."

"I can see that. And you throw a great party."

"Thank you. I didn't catch your name."

A young woman in a black suit without the requisite sequins and huge diamonds hugging her neck and dangling from her ears stepped next to Marilyn before he had time to lie.

"I hate to interrupt you," the woman said, her tone and manner all business. "Mr. Delacroix asked me to find you."

"Is there a problem?"

"Yes, ma'am. He said the mayor has been held up and he's not certain he can make it in time for the formalities."

"Oh, dear. We can't start without him. He's giving Lee's congratulatory speech."

Marilyn turned her eyes if not her attention back to Remy. "Perhaps we can talk later. In the meantime, enjoy yourself. I know you must be as proud of Lee as we are."

"Absolutely. He's a breed unto himself."

"My husband says it's about time Lee received recognition for all he's done for the city."

And Remy was here to see that Lee got exactly what was coming to him. The sins of old had ridden long enough. It was payback time.

By the time Remy reached the ballroom, it was teeming with guests. Couples rocked the dance floor to the beat of a loud, jarring tune Remy had never heard before and with any luck would never hear again.

He scanned the room, growing antsy when he still didn't spot Lee. Surely the guy wasn't late to a party given in his honor.

Finally the band took a break. Remy's ears enjoyed the moment until a woman's laughter caught him off guard, so hauntingly familiar it sliced into his heart.

He took a deep breath. His mind was playing cruel tricks on him. He had to get a grip. He'd known returning to New Orleans would bring back the old memories, but he couldn't let anything get in the way of what he'd come to do.

Yet when he heard the laughter again, he found himself walking toward the sound until he spotted the woman responsible for the free-spirited exuberance. She was facing away from him, but the straight, silky red hair that reached her shoulders was so much like Carlotta's that Remy had to struggle to breathe.

She was taller than Carlotta, or perhaps the height came from the silver heels that peeked from below a swirl of emerald-green silk. Her waist was as narrow as Carlotta's had been, her shapely hips well-defined.

Damn. Start falling prey to old desires and he'd make a fool of himself. Carlotta was dead. The woman with the lyrical laugh and burnished red hair was a stranger. Still, he was far too intrigued at this point to walk away without seeing her face.

He circled her and the young woman at her side, keeping his distance, but not so far away that he couldn't see the fullness of her red lips or the nose that turned up ever so slightly. Her smile was dazzling. Her features were striking. She was an absolute knockout.

She wasn't Carlotta.

He exhaled slowly, regaining a much-needed sense of equilibrium. But then their gazes met and for a second a sense of deja vu ran so strong that it rocked his soul.

He turned away, exchanged his empty glass for a full one from the tray of a timely waiter and strode toward the double doors that led to the back loggia. He needed fresh air and to put some space between himself and the tantalizing redhead.

Nicole Smith's gaze followed the sexy stranger as he walked away. She was certain she'd never seen him before, yet for one brief moment, she'd felt as if she were drowning in the depths of his whiskey-colored eyes.

Her friend Deanie nudged her with her shoulder. "Who is that luscious creature and why haven't I met him before?"

"I've never seen him before, either, but he must be a friend of Lee's," Nicole answered. "Likely someone on the police force."

"May the force be with me."

"Your husband might object."

"Oh, yeah, him," Deanie teased. "But you're not married, and you're the one he was staring at. Go check him out."

"I'm here with Lee."

"Exactly."

Deanie made no secret of her negativity where Lee was concerned. She thought he was arrogant and chauvinistic, but it was only because she didn't know him the way Nicole did. Sure, he was tough. He was a cop who'd risen through the ranks. But he had his sensitive side, and he spoiled her in so many ways that she actually wished she were sexually attracted to him.

"Go say hello to the hot stranger," Deanie urged. "You know you want to."

"If I do, it's only because he looks vaguely familiar and I'm wondering if we've met before."

"That's as good an excuse as any to start up a conversation with a gorgeous hunk." Deanie put a hand to the small of Nicole's back and gave her a gentle shove in the stranger's direction.

"I'll go introduce myself if you go with me," Nicole said.

"You are such a wimp, Nicole. Besides, I'm going to find Billy. Suddenly I'm in the mood for a little romantic adventure of my own."

"If Marilyn catches you having a quickie in one of the upstairs bedrooms, you'll be blacklisted forever."

"I wouldn't dream of it. Too stuffy. I'm thinking about under the fake stars in the back of the Delacroixes' Saint Charles Avenue garden. How often does a lowly nurse get a chance to do that?"

Deanie sashayed off before Nicole could come up with an appropriate response. Deanie was bright, witty, daring, candid and totally unimpressed with money or social status.

The only reason she and her husband were here tonight was because Nicole had asked Lee to add them to the invitation list. Having Deanie around made these occasions a lot more fun for Nicole and she knew she couldn't duck out of this one, not when tonight was all about Lee.

Lee—her date for the evening, and yet here she was, drawn to a sexy stranger with mesmerizing eyes and a killer body.

Before she could talk herself out of it, she turned and joined him on the balcony.

"It's a nice night for a party," Nicole murmured as she stopped next to the stranger.

When he turned to face her, a ridiculous zinging sensation danced along her nerve endings.

"A splendid night," he agreed. "And it just got a whole lot better."

A slow burn crept to her cheeks. Impulsively, she checked his ring finger. It was bare. "I love spring in New Orleans," she said, directing the subject back to the weather.

"So do I. But blink twice and it will have turned into the humid heat of summer."

"Ah, you know the city. Do you live here?" she asked.

"I used to—a lifetime ago."

Edginess crept into his voice, making him all the more intriguing.

"Are you a friend of Lee's?"

"You could say that."

"I'm sure he'll be glad you made the party."

"If I ever run into him. I'm beginning to think he dodged his own celebration."

"He's here somewhere," Nicole assured him, "probably surrounded by well-wishers or talking police business."

"No doubt."

She put out a hand. "I'm Nicole Smith. You look familiar. Have we met before?"

"No. If we had, I'm sure I'd remember."

His hand wrapped around her much smaller one and he held it. Her pulse quickened.

"I'm Andre," he said, smiling and meeting her gaze before finally letting go of her. "Hope you don't mind my saying so, but you do great things for that dress."

"Thank you."

"Do the Delacroixes always throw such lavish parties?"

"Always."

He looked around. "They have the perfect mansion for it."

"The gardens are lovely, too," Nicole said, "especially this time of the year. You should make time to see them."

His brows arched. "Is that an offer of a tour?"

"No…. I mean…" She swallowed back a twinge of guilt and a rush of blood that made her positively light-headed. "I would offer, but I have to get back to the party."

"That's a gracious brush-off." He leaned closer and slid his hand across the railing until their fingers touched.

Awareness sizzled.

"I should get back to the party myself, but it was nice meeting you, Nicole."

"Likewise," she murmured. She leaned on the railing and watched as he walked away, still reeling from the effect he'd had on her and faced with an undeniable truth.

Lee Barnaby had never excited her senses like that.

Remy walked back into the house determined to get his mind off the gorgeous redhead and back where it belonged. The woman had ignited so many sparks that he was still feeling the heat.

But he couldn't act on the attraction. She reminded him far too much of Carlotta, and not just her laugh. It was her hair, her eyes, her enchanting Southern drawl.

Even if he weren't about to jump into a blazing fire of his making, contacting her would be a mistake. And not fair to either of them, even if she were willing to see him again.

After another ten minutes of searching, Remy spotted Lee at the far end of the ballroom. He looked much the same as he had eight years ago, except that he'd put on a few pounds and his hair had started to gray a bit at the temples. Still, he looked younger than his age, which Remy knew was somewhere in the early fifties.

Remy cleared the few yards between them without Lee noticing him. He was seconds away from showing his face when Lee was joined by the seductive redhead.

Lee turned and slipped an arm around her shoulder, pulling her into the cluster of people who surrounded him.

The gesture and the smile she flashed for Lee appeared overly familiar, almost intimate. Remy felt a tightening in his gut. The woman had seemed far too nice to get romantically involved with a dirty rat like Lee—even if he hadn't been too old for her. Not that it was any of Remy's business.

Remy stayed out of sight, watching silently until Lee whispered something in the woman's ear that made her smile. Then the illustrious new NOPD chief turned and walked away.

Following quickly, Remy caught up with him just as he ducked into a small, hallway powder room.

Without breaking stride, Remy blocked the door with his foot before it could close completely. He pushed into the tiny room with Lee, then closed and locked the door behind them.

It was time to get reacquainted.

ISBN: 9780373696741

"Bayou Payback" by Joanna Wayne. Former NOPD narcotics officer Remy Comeaux returns to New Orleans, a place of tragedy since he lost his fiancée and reason for breathing Carlotta Worthington to Katrina. His quest is to end the corrupt reign of newly appointed Police Commissioner Lee Barnaby. However, Lee's girlfriend Katrina survivor Nicole Smith reminds Remy of Carlotta.

"Bayou Jeopardy" by Rita Herron. Several years have passed since Katrina, but ex-city Police Detective Mack Rivet has just returned to New Orleans for the first since the flood killed his wife Lily and son Winston, and someone with influence had him arrested on phony charges. However he is unprepared for the shocker that his wife and a son he never met are alive. Mack considers three corrupt individuals (his father-in-law Melvin Landry, Mayor Barrow and lawyer Tate Manning) as the only suspects setting him up as each had much to gain with his removal from the scene.

"Bayou Justice" by Mallory Kane. Eight years ago, FBI agent Ray Storm went undercover in New Orleans to bring down corrupt politician Martin Hennessy for taking funds earmarked to fix the levees. Ray used Martin's innocent sister Molly to get evidence against the Louisiana Disaster Avoidance Task Force Chief. However, Katrina destroyed the proof. Now Ray is back in town and needs the woman he used and abandoned to bring down her sibling, who is running for governor.

Eight years ago Katrina enabled the corrupt to win on the backs of desperate citizens and caring honest cops trying to help the people. Now these dedicated law enforcement officials are back in these exciting three tales of romantic suspense.

BAYOU PAYBACK by Joanna Wayne
New Orleans will never be the same as before Katrina - the hurricane took the love of Remy Comeaux's life. Now crashing a swanky party, the PI and former narcotics cop has a lot of grudges, and not just against floodwater. Allegations of police corruption and murder fill his thoughts, but he still notices a gorgeous redhead. Nicole is dating Remy's main suspect but after Remy's warnings she decides to sort out the truth - even if it means putting herself in harm's way.

BAYOU JEOPARDY by Rita Herron
Mack Rivet mourned the loss of his wife and child during Katrina. He's stuck with a bad name as a corrupt cop. When he learns that the man responsible for tarnishing his reputation has been jailed, he hopes there could be a chance to clear his name. But his wife Lily and their son survived unknown to him, believing that Mack had drowned instead. When they meet, the man who wrecked their personal lives becomes Mack's priority.

BAYOU JUSTICE Mallory Kane
Ray Storm was an FBI agent during Katrina. Now he's absorbing the changes to his old district. Angel DePuye, once an addict and his confidential informant, has got clean and joined the police force. Ray knows that hundreds of thousands of documents were destroyed in the flooding including police evidence, and numerous people used the opportunity to disappear. A girl called Molly Hennessy was allowed to believe that Ray had died. Ray really wishes there wasn't so much standing between them... what's more, he spots that she's being followed.

The linked novellas all show the dark side of the city. I hope police corruption isn't as widespread as we're told. The lingering after-effects of the storm are shown; some neighbourhoods are rebuilt, others desolate, others changed beyond recognition for the characters. This is an interesting but more noir than Mardi Gras.

Amazon.com Review
Have you ever dreamed of being locked in a department store at night? The endearing story of Corduroy paints a picture of the adventures that might unfold (for a teddy bear at least) in such a situation. When all the shoppers have gone home for the night, Corduroy climbs down from the shelf to look for his missing button. It's a brave new world! He accidentally gets on an elevator that he thinks must be a mountain and sees the furniture section that he thinks must be a palace. He tries to pull a button off the mattress, but he ends up falling off the bed and knocking over a lamp. The night watchman hears the crash, finds Corduroy, and puts him back on the shelf downstairs. The next morning, he finds that it's his lucky day! A little girl buys him with money she saved in her piggy bank and takes him home to her room. Corduroy decides that this must be home and that Lisa must be his friend. Youngsters will never get tired of this toy-comes-alive tale with a happy ending, so you may also want to seek out Dan Freeman's next creation, A Pocket for Corduroy. (Ages 3 to 8)

Review
A winning, completely childlike picture book in which a stuffed bear waiting hopefully in a toy department finds a home with a little black girl. Endearing, brightly colored pictures. -- Booklist

About the Author
Don Freeman was born in San Diego, California, in 1908. At an early age, he received a trumpet as a gift from his father. He practiced obsessively and eventually joined a California dance band. After graduating from high school, he ventured to New York City to study art under the tutelage of Joan Sloan and Harry Wickey at the Art Students' League. He managed to support himself throughout his schooling by playing his trumpet evenings, in nightclubs and at weddings.

Gradually, he eased into making a living sketching impressions of Broadway shows for The New York Times and The Herald Tribune. This shift was helped along, in no small part, by a rather heartbreaking incident: he lost his trumpet. One evening, he was so engrossed in sketching people on the subway, he simply forgot it was sitting on the seat beside him. This new career turned out to be a near-perfect fit for Don, though, as he had always loved the theater.

He was introduced to the world of children’s literature when William Saroyan asked him to illustrate several books. Soon after, he began to write and illustrate his own books, a career he settled into comfortably and happily. Through his writing, he was able to create his own theater: "I love the flow of turning the pages, the suspense of what's next. Ideas just come at me and after me. It's all so natural. I work all the time, long into the night, and it's such a pleasure. I don't know when the time ends. I've never been happier in my life!"

Don died in 1978, after a long and successful career. He created many beloved characters in his lifetime, perhaps the most beloved among them a stuffed, overall-wearing bear named Corduroy.

Don Freeman was the author and illustrator of many popular books for children, including Corduroy, A Pocket for Corduroy, and the Caldecott Honor Book Fly High, Fly Low.

My Corduroy!
By Barbara Spisak
Beautiful story about friendship and the need for friends. I always need to do follow-ups on my stories. Of course we'll talk about our favorite stuffed animals or dolls. And as the big finish we'll stuff bear patterns and lace up through the holes I already punched. We'll need to decorate first a face some google eyes and clothes, not necessarily just like Corduroy's but made from wall paper or construction or colored or painted. I believe in open-ended projects and rarely make one before the students. This is their creation to make them happy not me. I am really trying to eliminate the 'is this right?' My response is 'do you like it? then it must be right .

After remembering how much I loved this book as a child
By Samantha Armendariz
After remembering how much I loved this book as a child, I bought it for my daughters. It's much more old fashioned than I remember but I enjoy that, and I think it'll make for great conversation when they're old enough to see the difference in what they see in the book vs the "real" world. Such a wonderful, classic book!

A classic that never gets old!
By AudreyLatson
This was my favorite book as a young child and when I found out I was going to be an aunt for the first time I knew I wanted to give my nephew this memory of mine. The paperback version is durable and still gives off the same feeling as the copy I had growing up. I can't wait to read this to my nephew when he is a little older!
