The main drawback involves a few occasions where the author repeats himself within a line passage - almost as if the book was written in a single sitting and the author got tired. Worth buying a Kindle for!

I first used David Guzik's Romans commentary and found it helpful to the amateur and the student. As I led the Romans study some of the students purchased the commentary and have been quoting it as they share. The James part I have used as I am taking a study on James at Precept Ministries and have found it helpful. The commentary does not tell you what to believe but gives you research that would take hours of time and resources few people have. This is a very inexpensive tool to help God's Word come to life for you! I told my students it is worth getting a Kindle just to have these commentaries!

I love how Guzik is balanced in his commentary approach. Input from other commentators and the explanation of either the Hebrew nuances or the Greek syntax is often very helpful in bringing a deeper meaning into the passage. David's commentaries are easy to read and understand, while adding depth to personal, as well as ministry study.

The most complete Kindle Fire HD guide I've read and a logical layout

I'm a fan of the "My ________" series. I've used their books for several phones and tablets and I generally think that they are as close to comprehensive as you can get while remaining incredibly approachable. They have nicely designed step-by-step guides, helpful pictures, and a design layout that makes them easy to read and find what you're looking for. But there are many authors that write for the series and I'm always curious as to whether an author I haven't read before will keep up with the standard set by those authors I've really enjoyed in the past.

Jim Cheshire and Jennifer Kettell done great work here. Like the "My __________" books I've read before, My Kindle Fire HD is about as close to comprehensive as you could hope for (more so I thought even than Kindle Fire HD For Dummies). It answered all of my questions and discusses most of the ways I can imagine interacting with the Kindle Fire HD. Its broken into 13 chapters:

1. Getting Started (Since this book starts with the most basic of info like how to click and where the power switch is I'd say this book has no prerequisites and would work well for a complete beginner)
2. Loading Your Kindle Fire
3. Using Amazon's Manage Your Kindle Fire Page
4. Reading on the Kindle Fire
5. Managing Content with Calibre
6. Accessing and Listening to Music
7. Watching Video on Your Kindle Fire
8. Installing and Using Apps
9. Using Social Media and Chat
10. Reading and Sending E-mail
11. Managing Your Personal Documents and Data
12. Browsing the Web with Silk
13. Giving Your Kids a Kindle Fire

Each chapter is composed of a short introduction to the topics covered in it. This is followed by a mix of commentary and step-by-step guides. The guides are formatted in easy to identify light blue boxes which makes it easy to skip the commentary and find just the how-to if that's all you need.

The guides also usually contain labeled screenshots to help you identify the buttons referred to in the step-by-step guides. I thought this was really helpful as I've run into difficulties with other guide books and hardware when I was directed to "find the cookies button in the advanced tab of the security menu which can be located within preferences." In cases like this, being shown the button is just so much easier and this book does that.

Because of the order the chapters are laid out I'd assume that beginners would want to read this book cover to cover and in order (some skills build on those taught early on), but it has a very usable index and would work well for someone with a little more experience who needs a reference only for specific topics. The layout of the text supports using the book this way too by setting the guides off in there own boxes as I mentioned before.

Overall this book absolutely lives up to my expectations both for a guide for the Kindle Fire HD, and for the "My ___________" series of books as a whole. It has enough information to get you up and running on your new device and enough information to give even a seasoned user some tips to make their experience run smoother. Its absolutely money well spent.

What a Bummer!

THis is not a book, strictly speaking. It is twelve pages long, and it has an average of three paragraphs per page, with 6 spaces between each. In short (no pun intended!) it is more of a brochure, or excerpts from someone's term paper they wrote in college. I was very disturbed by this. It was one of my first purchases for my Kindle, and I did not not know that something described as a book could be something otherwise. I have since gone back to the Kindle store to see if there was some warning of the shortness. There was none, but many other books had the number of pages listed. If the number of pages had been listed, I might have not purchased this item.
That said, it was an okay read--if short, and to the point! If there were some way to return it and get my $$ back, I would. But it was only $2.99 so I think I will live.

An excellent appreciation of the "old" ways

This trilogy was one I read many years ago and only returned to recently. On this reading it was an even better - recalling in detail a life which has totally gone now but has a wonder and joy in it which we can no longer experience. On having her fortune told - the main character was told she would be loved by people she had never met - for once astrology worked. An excellent piece of literature.

A detailed picture of a time that has passed

Flora Thompson wrote about what she knew - a rural life in a small village near Oxford, and in such a way that you feel you are there with her. This book was adapted for the British TV show "Lark Rise To Candleford," but be aware that the book itself has less of the interpersonal relationships that are developed in the show and much more description of the environment. As an Anglophile and lover of British folk music, I thoroughly enjoyed this.

Beautiful descriptions of hamlet living and a time long past

I came to this book by way of the beautifully-filmed series Lark Rise to Candleford (Seasons 1-4). The show is a stellar production with a great ensemble cast and heartwarming stories, and I had to read the source work which inspired the series. This edition of Flora Thompson's Lark Rise to Candleford contains the trilogy, i.e. "Lark Rise", "Over to Candleford", and "Candleford Green".

As for the work itself, I have found it to be most illuminating. The trilogy has been seen as a sort of semi-autobiographical work, and the character of Laura as seen to reflect Thompson. The amazing thing about this work is that Ms. Thompson wrote it about forty years after the events she witnessed. The stories reflect the glory days of England's pastoral life, and there is a sense of idealism in the portrayal of people's lives back then, almost as if these were the best of times, despite the poverty of many of the inhabitants of the villages. Ms. Thompson's writing may gloss over the serious problems affecting the people in the hamlets at that time, but it is nevertheless an important work that adds to the various collections of memoirs and journals describing the English countryside and the lives of the inhabitants of the hamlets surrounding it.

I loved reading about the little details of hamlet living, and even though the descriptions can at times be almost tedious in their details, I savored each and every word. It made me yearn for a simpler, less frenetic life, one that seems almost impossible in today's hectic, technology-inundated world.

I also enjoyed reading about the characters, some of which are found in the BBC drama adaptation. It was rather illuminating to read about Robert Timmins, a strong-minded, independent, proud man who is seen as a father figure among the Lark Risers in the TV show. In the book, I learned that Robert grew to become a very bitter man who never quite fit in with his surroundings, and whose life eventually lapsed into degeneracy!

This is a wonderful work for many reasons, but most of all for eliciting one's feelings of nostalgia for long gone days. One of the passages in the book reads,
"Candleford Green was but a small village and there were fields and meadows and woods all around it. As soon as Laura crossed the doorstep, she could see some of these. But mere seeing from a distance did not satisfy her; she longed to go alone far into the fields and hear the birds singing, the brooks tinkling, and the wind rustling through the corn, as she had when a child. To smell things and touch things, warm earth and flowers and grasses, and to stand and gaze where no one could see her, drinking it all in." I too long to walk far into the fields, and to have the luxury of time to do it!

This is the story of a young man thrust into the Royal Navy in distant Hong Kong. He relates some of the humorous situations in which he found himself and provides a realistic account of what life was like for servicemen in pre war Hong Kong.

It describes the prelude to war from his point of view and his part in the Battle for Hong Kong. There follows the story of what happened to him when taken prisoner and life and death in prison camps in Hong Kong and Japan. It tells what it was like to be shipped to Japan in the hold of Japanese merchant men with constant fear of being torpedoed.

In Japan itself he and his fellow prisoners were used as slave labor. Treatment was harsh and brutal and although many of them died the Japanese never broke the spirit of the survivors.

The author explains how it felt to be a prisoner working in a Japanese factory when a major earthquake struck. He also relates what it was like to be on the receiving end of a B29 fire raid and what the Japanese did to downed American airmen. In August 1945 he saw the Japanese bow before loudspeakers and although he did not realize it then, heard the Japanese Emperor announce the surrender of Japan. The book contains a tribute to the efficiency and kindness of the American forces that got him out and on his way home.

Gripping description of life as a prisoner of war in the Pacific during World War II

This book is a riveting description of the events leading up to the capture of the author in Hong Kong during World War II and his four years as a prisoner of war. While it shows the cruelty he suffered during his captivity, it also provides an understanding of the enormous efforts the American military made in World War II.
It was so well written that I couldn't put it down!

An inspiring story of a man who survived the horrors of captivity as a POW! Through both luck and strength, he did what was necessary to survive and then went on to make his life successful. Having spent time as a professional businessman later in life back in Japan may have too much for others but he recognized an important fact! It was not the Japanese ordinary citizen who had inflicted the suffering during imprisonment! A must-read!

Interesting insight into the inhumane treatment to which allied prisoners were subjecteď. Written with clear descriptions and logical order.could have done without the history lesson at the end, but the book is worth the read.
