Kieran realizes that he’s probably dealing with a criminal, rather than an actual captain, but he’s just desperate enough to accept. He flies out to the nearest station and returns with a slicer and some dangerous-looking backup. As he’s making his approach to the station, Kieran hears a garbled cry for help over the comm. He hopes it’s just his imagination.

But it’s not. Half the station’s crew is being held hostage, while the other half appear to be masquerading as Union officers. Kieran and his team disable the lockdown, and to Kieran’s amazement, they are given a ship as promised. As they are leaving the station, they see an entire fleet of Union cruisers pouring out of the newly-reactivated space gate. Kieran is confused. What are so many warships doing on the frontier? The Union isn’t at war.

Kieran sets out to investigate, but along the way strange things start happening to him and his crew. At first there seem to be logical explanations, but before long the answers are not so clear. As time goes by, Kieran realizes the horrible truth:

It's the kind of book I'd enjoy reading, but it's not a literary masterpiece, and it has undertones of horror which some people certainly don't like. The book has some depth, but mostly it's a Big Mac book. You're not reading Science Daily or Pyschology Today; you're reading Escape by Jasper Scott, and it's still much better for you than TV ;).Q2. Which writers/books do you draw your inspiration from?A2.Any and all writers and books can inspire me, but my favorites are Michael Crichton, Steven King, Dean R. Koontz, and Wilbur Smith. I'm also an avid fan of all the Star Wars books (I personally own more than 100), but there are too many Star Wars authors for me to mention them by name.

   There was a long, hissing pause on the other end of the comm, then came the whisper of a reply: "Get. Help!" It was so softly spoken against the background of static, that at first Kieran had trouble making out the words, and he wondered if maybe his mind was playing tricks on him.
   "Say again, control? You're not coming through very clearly. This is Kieran Hawker of the Interloper, requesting permission to dock. . . ."
Kieran frowned heavily, his ears straining to hear through the static.
   "Please proceed to dock, prospector Hawker."
   "Acknowledged." Get help? Who said that? Kieran was beginning to feel uneasy about helping these terrorists. It sounded like there were hostages aboard the station. 

About the Author
Jasper Scott is the USA Today best-selling author of more than 13 novels. He primarily writes science fiction and is most famous for his Dark Space series, which has been translated into German and Japanese and has over 300,000 books sold to date.
Jasper was born and raised in Canada by South African parents, with a British cultural heritage on his mother's side and German on his father's, to which he has now added Latin culture with his wonderful wife. 
After spending years living as a starving artist, he finally quit his various jobs to become a full-time writer. In his spare time he enjoys reading, traveling, going to the gym, and spending time with his family.

Not perfect, but fast-paced and entertaining

Like many free books on Amazon, this one isn't perfect. There are editing errors and other minor issues that make it clear that this book is self-published. It's probably more of a 3 star book, but it's still worth a read (especially at the price), so I bumped it up to four.

The plot is strained at the beginning of the book- the main character does some things that seem like really, really bad ideas. But without this first implausible leap, the rest of the book wouldn't happen... and the rest of the book is pretty good. The characters are decently developed and the action is fast-paced. The overall plot is interesting, and the ending is likely not what you'll expect. Overall, the story is a mix of sci-fi and apocalyptic literature, with a moral message underlying the whole book. Despite its faults, I enjoyed the book and downloaded another by the same author.

High Tech Zombies

If I knew this was going to be a book about zombies I never would have started it. I thought the book was ok overall but not what I expected from the title. If you like zombie stories you might like this one.

Don't Recommend

The story line and characters seemed shallow. Additionally, the characters made the same mistakes all too familiar in movies (e.g. sticking around when they should be running away). This seems like an attempt to upgrade the zombie genre with technology - it didn't work too well. I would recommend skipping this one.

How this relates to other collections

Of course if you enjoy Dorothy Sayers' fiction, you'll enjoy this collection. A note about the contents: This collection includes stories published in the books Hangman's Holiday and Lord Peter Views the Body. It does not include the stories published in Striding Folly or In the Teeth of the Evidence.

Great reading at a bargain price

The book contains 24 short stories, mostly Lord Peter Wimsey, but six Montague Egg stories as well. The stories are clever and well thought out, though one story where Lord Peter goes undercover for two years seems a bit far-fetched. Montague Egg is a travelling salesman in wines and spirits (high class of course) and quite far from the more familiar Lord Peter. Of necessity, his mysteries are usually things he comes across while "travelling" and tend to be short and to the point.

If you enjoy 30s-era British mysteries this book is a great bargain - over 600 pages for $2.99.

Great intro for a note reader to learn chords

I am a long time note reader but never really got the theory of chords and how to use them to embellish my hymn playing at church & home. This book helped me a great deal actually, even though its oriented toward introducing newbies to the piano. I have played the piano technically well for years, but i couldn't play anything but what was written on the page. Now i can do significantly more thanks to this book. I bought two copies for friends in simlar situations.

Far too difficult for a kids book.

My daughter and I are learning to play piano together. I got The Older Beginner Piano Course for myself and this book for my daughter. This book is utterly useless compared to my book. It is formatted like a novel. It's all reading and theory in the beginning. No child would sit through all that, much less understand and retain it. I'll be using my book to teach her. It has simple exercises that teach the theory as you go.

Same as the adult book, but with a condescending tone.

I have always liked the Piano in a Flash series, although some pieces are not well suited to block chord accompaniment. The children's book seems to have been written as an afterthought. I have been teaching piano to children for many years and would never use the same curriculum as I do with adults. The matter of fact presentation of theory misses a great opportunity to enlighten children with interesting historic tidbits and insights. To be fair, I compose most of my children's curriculum and use tricks and techniques that are not commonly found in teaching methods. I.M.H.O, June Weybright and John Thompson were outstanding in their approach, while the Alfred Basic Piano Library provides a smooth and solid structure that is theory based. That said, I do recommend the other Piano in a Flash books.

Intriguing Perspective on Evangelism

There is no debate that personal evangelism is part of those who walk as Christ-followers. The Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20) and other verses such as 1 Peter 3:15: "... always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence ..." affirm that as fact.

In the book of Acts, we have several testimonies from Stephen, Peter, and Paul and none of them give personal testimonies. Without exception, they told the historical story of Jesus Christ which the hearers knew intimately as the events referred to were still affirmed by eye witnesses.

However, with the separation of two millennia, Christiansen's book demonstrates a practical, simple, useable method by which Christ-followers can communicate their faith to their circle of influence.

My only caveat is that there is more to the Christian story than simple experience. It is up to the individual Christian to read the hard books Christian apologetics because in my line of work I can encounter people who can seriously give emotional testimony to all matter of worldviews. Agreed, we as Christians are armed with prayer and the Holy Spirit, but in an age where Christians in the pulpit are becoming more and more illiterate about their own faith, we still need to be able "to make a defense."

The disciplines of archeology and history are the friends of Biblical Christianity. It is up to us who want to be used of God to give a full defense by doing hard study and learning the historical underpinnings of our faith.

Interesting read for a non-christian

I bought this book because I am in a book club with people of different faiths. I felt I should learn more about others beliefs if I was going to be able to talk to them. Because this is a group that values tolerance, hard for someone as opinionated as I am, I read this book with tolerance in mind.

While I expected to have my arm twisted to believe someone else's faith, I came away with a new respect for the devotion and integrity possessed by people caring about their faith and their friends to want to share how they live. While this book is written for believers who need encouragement to speak about their beliefs, I came away with a new respect for the fears and insecurities they face, namely judgment by others who don't agree with them. Who likes to be judged. I may not agree with people who speak about their faith, but after seeing it from the other side of the coin, I think my mind will be more about respecting how others live their lives.

However, though the topic is talking about Christianity, I found this an invaluable book on communicating in general, with encouragement to speak in stories, to be understanding of your audience, to speak "to" people, rather than "at" them. Important reminders for all of us. For a short read, definitely worth my time.

I'm giving it four stars because, since I'm not in the shoes of the intended reader, I'm not sure if all the bases were covered. Probably, but just in case, that is my oly concern.

Should Your Beliefs Be 'Silent?'

I have to admit that I was skeptical about this book when a close friend recommended it.

The fact is, it has always felt more 'natural' to keep personal beliefs, and specifically
the ones about faith, very private. It truly was no one else's business, I thought.

But reading this book has shifted my thinking about how personal faith needs to be or
should be.

Could it be that 'keeping it a secret' so to speak was just a fear of revealing 'too much'
of myself? And was it just really lazy thinking to not ever be challenged on that faith by
others, simply because it was never discussed?

A good book is thought-provoking, a truly great book causes you to confront yourself and,
if you are ready to, it gives you the 'space' to change and also points to the path.

That's exctly what this book does so well. I can see it being must-reading for faith groups,
and a way to open up discussion on something that needs to be talked about - how do we talk
about faith in a genuine, honest and compassionate way to an often unresponsive audience?

How do we effectively live our faith, out loud? And how can we do this in a way that helps
us, as well as the listeners, grow in faith and understanding?

If these are issues you have grappled with - or feel ready to now - this book is the
companion you need on that journey.

Thanks for the $100 moving average crossover system

I like most of the books from Connors Research, but after getting this one I was a little underwhelmed that the strategy is just a simple moving average cross-over system of the VXX. It includes backtest results and information about the nature of VXX and it's relation to the VIX, but most of that is out on the web. I coded the system in Ninjatrader and my results didn't quite match up with the book's, but they were profitable but drawdown was larger than I would have liked, especially since 2015. There are more sophisticated volatility ETN strategies out there. Check out the "VIX and More" blog and tradingvolatility.net

Volatility and trend are your friends

Connors Research offers both mean reversion and trend following strategies, but the VXX Trend Following Strategy is (obviously) the latter. The hardest part about this strategy is to understand the VXX symbol that you are trading. The VXX simply holds a portfolio of VIX (Volatility Index) futures. You will want to dig in and understand what you are buying and this book takes several pages to walk you through the VXX.

There are several strengths to this strategy. The first is that you only need to follow one trading symbol, VXX. Second, the trade entry rules are extremely straight forward and you will be able to set this up in any free trading/charting platform. Third, this strategy takes both long and short trades. To be “long” you are betting on the price to go higher and to be “short” means you are betting on price to go lower. You must understand this concept as the VXX has a downward bias and 85% of the trades will be “short”. Since the VXX is negatively correlated to the stock market, when the VXX is going lower, the stock market is going higher. So, most of the trades will be when the VXX is declining in price. The one downside is that the VXX has only been around since 2009, so there is not a decade of data to back test, but the results are compelling enough to stay engaged and not abandon the strategy.

It is typical to see trend following strategies with a Win Rate of 30% and still be profitable, but this is emotionally difficult for the trader. The VXX Trend Following Strategy has a Win Rate of 45% (depending on what moving average variation you use.) This is more than acceptable for a trend following system if you have the emotional strength to take the trades, and with an Average Gain per trade around 3%, the trader should feel more confident with each trade.

The book is one of the very few that actually tells you how to trade volatility. Precise rules and back tested results allow you to trade with confidence. This is a valuable book that could pay for itself with 2 or 3 trades.

Introduction

In the thirty years since the first edition of this book, much has changed in the world and in American education. And so, too, this book has evolved.

Back in 1982 when the first edition appeared, there was no Internet or email, no cell phones, DVD players, iTunes, iPods, iPads, Amazon, e-books, Wi-Fi, Facebook, or Twitter. The closest thing to an “instant message” was a facial expression that exasperated mothers gave their children as a warning. “Texting” was something you did on a typewriter. The first CD player was just going on sale, Starbucks was just a coffee-bean shop in Seattle, and if you said “laptop” to people they’d have thought you were talking about a TV-dinner tray.

For all of those differences, there are some things that remain the same. In 1982, the U.S. economy was in its worst recession since the Great Depression and the nation’s business leaders were looking for someone or something to blame. Sound familiar? Since S.A.T. scores had been in a twenty-year decline (because lots of average and below-average students, and not just the rich kids, were taking the tests for the first time), the corporate executives blamed education as one of the culprits for the recession and demanded reforms and accountability at all levels—a more business-like approach. (“If our schools were more like Japanese schools, our economy would be more like theirs!”) This would open the doors to nearly three decades of testing mania and school reforms.

At practically the same time, the cost of college began a 400 percent rise, outpacing the increases in medical care and median family income. By 2011, student loans would be larger than either the nation’s credit card debt or the auto loan industry.

Which brings us to the present time. With all the new technology now in place and billions of dollars in testing accomplished, we’ve made a one point improvement in reading scores since 1971.

If you’re even half sane, you have to be asking yourself, “What in the world is wrong here?” I hope this book can answer that question, as well as what we can do about it, because surely there’s a better way than what we’ve done in the past.

For all that is wrong in education, there are still some positives. With the hundreds of distractions imposed on American children in the last 30 years—200 cable channels; most children with TV’s in their bedrooms (usually the lowest scoring students); more than half of teens are attached to cellphones most of the day; single-parents are raising one in four children, and a baby is born every sixty seconds to a teen mother. It’s a wonder the scores actually rose by one point and didn’t drop by ten or fifteen. If that is the case, then something must be working and this book will examine what really works. In fact, let’s look now at one of those “somethings.”

The Ideal (and Cheapest) Tutoring Plan

We start with the family of Susan and Tad Williams and sons, Christopher and David. Of the four hundred thousand students taking the A.C.T. exam with Christopher back in 2002, only fifty-seven had perfect scores—he was the fifty-eighth. When word got out that this kid from Russell, Kentucky (population 3,645), had scored a perfect 36, the family was besieged with questions, the most common being “What prep course did he take? Kaplan? Princeton Review?” It turned out to be a course his parents enrolled him as an infant, a free program, unlike some of the private plans that now cost up to $250 an hour.

In responding to inquiries about Christopher’s prep courses, the Williamses simply told people—including the New York Times—that he hadn’t taken any, that he did no prep work. That, of course, wasn’t completely true. His mother and father had been giving him and his younger brother free prep classes all through their childhoods, from infancy into adolescence: they read to them for thirty minutes a night, year after year, even after they learned how to read for themselves.

Theirs was a home brimming with books but no TV Guide, GameCube, or Hooked on Phonics. Even though Susan Williams was a fourth-generation teacher, she offered no home instruction in reading before the boys reached school age. She and Tad just read to them–sowed the sounds and syllables and endings and blendings of language into the love of books. Each boy easily learned to read—and loved reading, gobbled books up voraciously. Besides being a family bonding agent, reading aloud was used not as test prep as much as an “ensurance” policy—it ensured the boys would be ready for whatever came their way in school.

By 2011, David was a University of Louisville graduate working as an engineer and Christopher was pursuing his PhD in biochemistry at Duke. Sometimes Christopher’s early reading experiences surface even in the biochemistry department, like the day after a Duke basketball loss and he remarked to his lunch mates, “I guess ‘there’s no joy in Mudville’ today.” None of the other grad students grasped the reference to Ernest Thayer’s classic sports poem.

The Williams family experience didn’t surprise me at all because I was already familiar with reading aloud as a prep course. Tom Parker recommends it all the time. He’s the former admissions director for Williams College, now at Amherst College, two of the nation’s prestigious small colleges. Parker tells anxious parents who ask about improving their child’s S.A.T. scores, “The best S.A.T. preparation course in the world is to read to your children in bed when they’re little. Eventually, if that’s a wonderful experience for them, they’ll start to read themselves.” Parker told me he’s never met a student with high verbal S.A.T. scores who wasn’t a passionate reader, and nearly always they recall being read to. An A.C.T. or S.A.T. prep course can’t package that passion, but parents like Susan and Tad Williams have done it and so can you. Even parents who are illiterate or semi-literate can do it—and we’ll meet them later in the book, along with a father who read to his daughter just for fun—for 3,218 nights in a row, never missing a night.

Inspiring and helpful

You already believe in reading aloud and feel comfortable enough doing it... so do you really need a Read Aloud Handbook? You probably don't NEED it, but I think you'll be grateful to have this book. As both a parent of young children and as a teacher of low-income middle school students (on a break to stay at home while my kids are young), I'm getting so much from it.

The biggest lure for me was the Handbook's "Treasury" - the annotated list of great read-aloud books that makes up the last third of the Handbook. I get overwhelmed when selecting books and wanted to be able to choose from a list of reliably loveable books for my children, as well as to make sure I wasn't missing any especially good choices for my middle school students. I'm pleased with the Treasury so far, both in the quality of books described and in the range of ages represented (There are a great few pages on reading to infants in Ch. 3 and any age toddler-8th grade should find several great recommendations in the Treasury). The bulk of the books described are picture books, short novels, and longer novels (100 pages and up), but there are some recommendations for poetry and reference books as well.

The first 170 pages of the Handbook covers topics like why we should be reading aloud, suggestions for reading aloud at each stage of development from infant up, tips for Sustained Silent Reading, and good and bad news about the growing dependence on digital reading. I'm surprised at how much I enjoyed these chapters. Here's what I loved:
* Inspiring: Trelease gives more than a sales-pitch for reading aloud - he makes the love and joy of reading with children contagious. I was already "sold" on reading aloud, but feel re-energized to make read-alouds more frequent and more fun.
* Challenging: The many anecdotes of inspiring educators and parents made me think. A teacher of 3 and 4 year olds reads chapter books as well as picture books... am I right to have assumed my 3 year old can't handle hearing a chapter book yet? And a mother read to her young child at meals as long a duration as the child showed interest... where can I work in more fun reading to our days? I could go on.
* Filled with practical suggestions: Some examples: great specific book recommendations when transitioning from picture books to novels, an anecdote of a clever ipod/text program for struggling readers, what we can learn from Oprah, and of course many practical dos and don'ts while reading aloud (before, during, and after reading). Several seem common sense, but they're still helpful.
* Readable: This reads like a conversation with a knowledgeable veteran educator who has formed strong opinions after years of getting to know how kids learn. It's filled with research, but not at all dense.

I'd also recommend Pam Allyn's What to Read When. There's not too much overlap; its book recommendations are more about teaching or opening up conversations on many different topics while the suggestions in Trelease's book are more about learning to love to read. Both are helpful to me.

A Must Read for Every Teacher and Parent

Who Should Read This Book?
If you're a teacher or a parent you might be thinking "I read to my kids every single day, I don't need to read this book." And you would be dead wrong. There is so much more to Jim's message than just "read to your kids" - it only scratches the surface of this book. The author explores every single aspect of reading aloud thoroughly- and in my opinion with just the right amount of research balanced with personal stories, making it a relaxing and enjoyable read. If it was up to me this book would be required reading for every single administrator, politician, school board member, teacher, and parent.

Fantastic update

I am devoted follower of the Read-Aloud Handbook, and I thought for sure Jim Trelease was officially retired, so imagine my delight when this seventh edition appeared on Amazon! To make things even better, there is tremendous amount of new material in this edition. I have read the sixth edition front to back multiple times (I even did a blog series reviewing it chapter by chapter), and I have a copy of the first edition that I found at the used bookstore, but now I think I might have to invest in copies of editions 2, 3, 4 and 5 as well! Trelease really does replace at least 40 percent of the content and significantly revise the book list. This is definitely worth ordering if you already have a previous edition.
