"A Good Deuce" introduces us to a "rural California teen dealing with the aftermath of a mother’s overdose," writes Rob Spillman, editor of Tin House and guest editor of this issue of Recommended Reading.
In his introduction, Spillman recalls when he first heard Jodi Angel read "A Good Deuce" two years ago. "She pulled us into a lower-class world of emotionally stunted teens, a bleak yet vibrant land a million miles away from the shiny, happy America of TV and advertising. "
About Recommended Reading:
Great authors inspire us. But what about the stories that inspire them? Recommended Reading, the latest project from Electric Literature, publishes one story every week, each chosen by a great author or editor. In this age of distraction, we uncover writing that's worth slowing down and spending some time with. And in doing so, we help give great writers, literary magazines, and independent presses the recognition (and readership) they deserve.
About the Author:
Jodi Angel’s first collection of short stories, The History of Vegas, was published in 2005 and was named as a San Francisco Chronicle “Best Book of 2005" as well as a LA Times Book Review “Discovery". Her work has appeared in Tin House, Zoetrope: All-Story, and The Sycamore Review, among other publications and anthologies. Her stories have received several Pushcart Prize nominations and she was selected for Special Mention in 2007. Most recently her story, "A Good Deuce," was noted as a "Distinguished Story of 2011" in The Best American Stories, 2012. She grew up in a small town in Northern California--in a family of girls.
Her new collection, You Only Get Letters from Jail, will be published by Tin House Books next Summer.
About the Guest Editor:
Tin House is a beautifully designed periodical featuring the best writers of our time alongside a new generation of talent who are poised to become the most important voices of the future. Content includes short stories, profiles, author interviews, poetry, essays, and unique departments such as "Lost & Found," in which writers review overlooked or underrated books, and "Blithe Spirits" and "Readable Feast," which present tales and recipes for drinks and food in a literary way.

Crisp, insightful short story - highly recommended
By Meanwhile, Melinda
I read this through TSP and Tin House. It grabbed my attention immediately and hung on with all the power a narrator can generate, until the very last word, when you are let go after you feel the author's satisfying conclusion. The stylistic prose is finely wordsmithed and packs quite a punch; with each sentence augmenting the ambiance, action, setting and characterization. The narrator is a poor,17 year old boy who has just lost his mother to a drug overdose. His older sister is leaving and his grandmother does not want him to stay. The story's plot is about the boy's first day of coping after his mother's death. Unexpected things happen, including an encounter with someone who just wants to help. It is a very powerful story written the way it was - with things to say about dysfunctional families, friendships, sex, death, grief, strangers, relationships of all kinds, jealousy and love. It was more than interesting and entertaing, it painted a vivid picture of one vignette in this boy's life as he lives it - giving us not only a ride on his shoulder as events unfold, but inside his head as well, living those few short hours that we are with him intensely and fully. Teen logic is hard to get right. I tried for years when my own kids were teenagers and it wasn't until years later that I had the insights necessary to understand it. The author does an amazing job getting the teen logic perfect and therefore her characterization of the boy is a mastercraft of prose. He immediately leaps off the page as an individual; complex, conflicted, harried, rueful. Let down by a life that has dealt him nothing but bad hands; he dares not look to the future with optimism, as no one and nothing he's ever dealt with have been positive, he bleakly explores the options he has - which is usually when life has a funny way of throwing a monkey wrench into things. This story is about the boy and his own personal monkey wrench of life.
Nothing in his short life has proven itself good so far - and no one either. Which is why the ending of the story is so intriguing. So much content, plot, characterization, vivid imagery and action are packed into this short story in such a beautifully written, stylistic yet powerful fashion that melds everything together that the author achieves amazing heights with this fusion. It entranced me - to the exception of all else. I missed three calls while the power of the story held me in its grasp and didn't even notice that the phone rang right next to me. I'm typically quite attentive to my phone, so that's an amazing testamonial to the power the story holds.
I have to tell you truthfully that I am not a big fan of short stories or short story anthologies, but this one was different. This one was so well written, so finely crafted, had such an impact on me that I cannot recommend it highly enough. Anyone who has the slightest interest in their fellow human beings should read this. It's worth every penny and more. My suggestion would be to buy it now and read it when you can do so undisturbed. You'll thank me later, after the ending puts a smile on your face.

Sex and Love and Death and Everything You Want from a Short Story
By sscheshire
I first read Jodi Angel's "A Good Deuce" in Electric Literature's Recommended Reading, and was happy to buy it here for so cheap. And apparently I can loan it out to other Amazon users. I had no idea. As far as the story - Roy has lost his Mom to an ugly death, and so he finds solace in booze and the love of a stranger in the back seat of a parked car. Why is such a story so damn good? Because there is not one false note; and the language is deeply felt, plainspoken, poetic (never overly so), and honest. "A Good Deuce" made me sad, and then it made me happy, and then it reminded me that happiness always makes me sad again. For fans of Dorothy Allison, Denis Johnson, Larry Brown, et al. And for those who can spare 99 cents. It's worth every penny.

A Fantastic Story From A Talanted Young Writer
By Michael B
It's impossible not to love a story with an opening line like this: "I was on my second bag of Doritos and my lips were stained emergency orange when my best friend, Phillip, said he knew a bar in Hallelujah Junction that didn't card, and maybe we should go there." From this opening the story goes on to explore the narrator's loss of his mother, the dissolution of his family, and the unlikely moments of comfort found in the midst of grief. It is a perfect balance of the tragic and comic: darkly morbid but ultimately hopeful. This narrator, and Angel's voice, stayed with me for a long time after reading. I can't wait to read the author's collection You Only Get Letters From Jail, as soon as it come out this summer.
