Storming Heaven, by Kyle Mills

Punished for his maverick ways, FBI agent Mark Beamon has been exiled from Washington, D.C., to a sleepy Southwest office where he's got one last chance to play by the rules. But that's not going to happen, not when he's on a case that may be too hot even for his unorthodox talents to handle.

A local millionaire and his wife are brutally murdered. Jennifer, their teenage child and sole heir; is the prime suspect -- and she's gone missing. Laying everything on the line, Beamon sets offon a trail that takes him from a remote survivalist's cabin in the Utah mountains, through the labyrinthine headquarters of a cultlike church, into the shadowy, interlocking boardrooms of a powerful high-tech communications empire.

Just when he thinks he's close to finding answers, Beamon discovers the killing of Jennifer's parents is far more sinister than even he could have guessed. Now he isn't just looking for a young girl -- he's got to stop a bizarre conspiracy that could bring America to its knees...

Amazon.com Review
Exiled in a Flagstaff field office after ruffling FBI feathers in Washington, special agent Mark Beamon investigates a double murder and kidnapping and finds that all clues lead to a cult-like church that has friends in high places--including the FBI. Beamon's career is on the line, as is a teenage girl's life, but wherever he goes, the Church of the Evolution mysteriously manages to get there just ahead of him.

Storming is sprinkled with a likeable cast of characters, including a retired wireman for the FBI, a weird ex-Church member who's more than eager to divulge its secrets, and a pretty psychiatrist who inspires Beamon to pump iron, lay off booze and cigarettes, and attempt to clean up his act. But his quick mind and faster mouth get him into plenty of trouble in his efforts to solve this smart, fast suspense thriller.

Stage and screen actor Joe Grifasi (Natural Born Killers, Presumed Innocent) narrates this author-approved abridgment with enough smooth malice to suit the swift pace of the novel. (Running time: three hours, two cassettes) --Jane Adams

From Publishers Weekly
This formulaic second novel starring maverick FBI agent Mark Beamon (after Rising Phoenix, 1997) suffers from contrived plotting, ponderous pacing and lapses of credibility. Now exiled to the rural environs of the Arizona bureau office, Beamon is called off the golf course to investigate what initially seems to be the murder of a couple by their disappeared teenaged daughter; although no federal crime is suggested until well into the investigation, G-man Beamon doesn't let details like jurisdiction bother him. And as it happens, young suspect Jennifer Davis has been kidnapped by the Kneissians, a sort of Mooney-like PTL Club, because she is in actuality the granddaughter of the sect's patriarch. The old man is dying, and he plans for her to take his place. However, his surrogate daughter, Sara, has other plans, and she uses the church's millions of members, billions of dollars and tentacular reaches into the highest levels of government and finance to ensure her own rise to power. All of which we know long before Beamon agonizingly figures it out. Suspended and thereby free to "break the rules," Beamon pursues Jennifer's kidnappers through the snowy streets of Flagstaff, with far-fetched strokes of luck and acts of derring-do better suited to old cop shows than to a novel. Shot through with cliches, inane dialogue and unnecessary accounts of Beamon's propensity for strong drink and tobacco, the novel slips along to a highly predictable conclusion. Non-stop suspense and action, a Great Read
By Kathleen P. McCahill
Kyle Mills has created an interesting character in Mark Beamon - a suffering, slightly edgy, moral man who refuses to back down, kind of like a pit bull who will protect til the end. The introduction of a cult-like religion was a twist. This book was so well written, planned out, it had you rooting for Mark Beamon (along with a cast of characters that were irritating, frightening and endearing). There were so many surprises and the premise of our privacy being invaded by a group of people with a different agenda was definitely not a far fetched idea.

Better than Rising Phoenix
By Jamie
I liked Kyle's first book, Rising Phoenix, but it wasn't enough to put him on my personal 'A' list of authors. However, Storming Heaven is so good that he immediately jumped up towards the top.
The characters are very compelling and are the strength of the story. This is definitely not one of those hollywood script style books like so many authors are putting out now. The characters and plot are thoroughly fleshed out and the detail is compelling.
If you like your heros flawed then Kyle's Mark Beamon is for you. He has drinking and weight problems, plus he has a hard time getting along with his boss (or any 'authority figure'). Beamon is truly one of the most memorable protagonists I have seen in a long time.
I highly recommend this book and think that if you enjoy real characters and good suspense you will enjoy it too.

The Vatican gets a break
By Mr. Joe
When it comes to pesky conspirators that cause headaches for literature's pantheon of fictional heroes, some have been around for so long that they're passe: ex- SS members, the KGB, and the Vatican. In STORMING HEAVEN, none of these are at the root of All Evil, and the Vatican gets a breather for once.
This time around, our hero is Mark Beamon, the troublesome but brilliant FBI agent exiled to the position of agent-in-charge of the bureau's Flagstaff office, an out-in-the-stix outpost of the Big House down in Phoenix. Mark is investigating the gunshot deaths of Eric and Patricia Davis and the disappearance of their teenage daughter Jennifer. (It's not apparent, or ever explained, why the local cops aren't a presence and the Feds have been brought into the case. It's uncertain at the outset that Jennifer was kidnapped, much less taken across state lines, the only rationale for FBI involvement.) In any case, before the storyline progresses too far the reader knows, and Beamon suspects, that the hierarchy of the Kneissians, a global religious cult, is up to no good in the affair.
Mark is the best reason to bother with STORMING HEAVEN. He's intolerant of nonsense emanating from the Front Office, unlucky when it comes to women, physically unprepossessing, and waging a losing battle with cigarettes, alcohol and a middle-age waistline. And he's irreverant. At one point in his investigation, he's asked by an ally to pray with her for their success:
"She pulled at his sleeve and he sank to his knees next to her wheelchair. She squeezed her eyes shut and began moving her lips soundlessly. Not really knowing what to do, he bowed his head and waited for her to snap out of it."
And he's realistic about the strengths of the character flaws laid at his door by his superiors, as when he's questioning a difficult suspect:
"It was time to make a decision on how to play this. There was the smart way, of course ... But that seemed kind of boring. The other option was to shoot himself in the foot and see if he could make the ice princess sweat a little."
I'd give the book three stars except for Beamon, who elevates it another click. Otherwise, the storyline is only marginally inventive, and the Kneissians aren't in the same league as the Vatican when it comes to truly insidious plotting. Where's a good renegade Cardinal when you need one?

Edge of Infinity (The Infinity Project Book 2), by Alastair Reynolds, Elizabeth Bear, Stephen Baxter, Bruce Sterling, Hannu Rajaniemi

ONE GIANT LEAP FOR MANKIND
Those were Neil Armstrong’s immortal words when he became the first human being to step onto another world. All at once, the horizon expanded; the human race was no longer Earthbound.
Edge of Infinity is an exhilarating new SF anthology that looks at the next giant leap for humankind: the leap from our home world out into the Solar System. From the eerie transformations in Pat Cadigan’s Hugo-award-winning “The Girl-Thing Who Went Out for Sushi” to the frontier spirit of Sandra McDonald and Stephen D. Covey’s “The Road to NPS,” and from the grandiose vision of Alastair Reynolds’ “Vainglory” to the workaday familiarity of Kristine Kathryn Rusch’s “Safety Tests,” the thirteen stories in this anthology span the whole of the human condition in their race to colonise Earth’s nearest neighbours.
Featuring stories by Hannu Rajaniemi, Alastair Reynolds, James S. A. Corey, John Barnes, Stephen Baxter, Kristine Kathryn Rusch, Elizabeth Bear, Pat Cadigan, Gwyneth Jones, Paul McAuley, Sandra McDonald, Stephen D. Covey, An Owomoyela, and Bruce Sterling, Edge of Infinity is hard SF adventure at its best and most exhilarating.

A good collection of hard science fiction stories
By Jscifireader
This book contains 13 stories of hard science fiction, written by British and American authors. Like most collections featuring stories by various authors, there are some stories that are very good, some that are average, and some that are not good. The very good stories include "Drive" by James S. A. Corey, "Safety Tests" by Kristine Kathryn Rusch, "Obelisk" by Stephen Baxter and "Vainglory" by Alastair Reynolds. The stories I did not enjoy were "Swift as a Dream and Fleeting as a Sigh" by John Barnes, "Bricks, Sticks, Straw" by Gwyneth Jones, and "The Peak of Eternal Light" by Bruce Sterling.

The stories mostly deal with the early centuries of humans exploring and colonizing the various planets and moons of our solar system. There are stories that take place on Mars, Mercury, Earth's moon and the moons of Jupiter, Saturn and Neptune. It was interesting to see how the authors imagined humans adapting themselves to live on worlds with different temperatures, atmospheres, resources and gravity than Earth. Colonists often would develop new cultures that differed from anything on Earth, and in some stories people had their bodies surgically modified to live on alien worlds. Many stories worked as a snapshot showing one possible obstacle people might face when colonizing new worlds, such as how to deal with limited resources or the bureaucracies that develop in any organization of people.

patchy, with a few standouts
By Nigel Kirk
The subject matter in these stories is as variable as their quality. To me, the blurb "One giant leap for mankind" promised a near future focus using plausible technology and characters. This is achieved in a few stories. Sometimes there is an inverse relationship between the past profile of the author and the merit of the short story, seemingly reflecting directly on the demands and attention of the editor. There are a few fine stories, perhaps cast into stark relief by some others. I have offered views on each short story, mindful that style can be a personal preference.

The girl-thing that went out for sushi by Pat Cadigan ****
This is initially uncomfortable to read. The cyberpunk? style, needing translation itself, lends to the difficulty of interpreting the post-human characters and their participation in the plot. It seemed there may have also been a gender issue being thrown around, but most of the allegory was fairly shallow. I am pleased I gave myself a break to muster some objectivity, contemplating that the relationship between this narrative and most contemporary authorship may be compared with the relationship between the possible day-to-day speech of working people in the outer planets many decades hence and the way we speak today. The comparison is similar and made me aware that this initially difficult story is in fact very insightful. As the story dealt with the change associated with progress, the associated manipulations of the power players, the exuberant intoxication of the youthful and strident, and the fall-out on the quotidian players in history, I was captivated. The post-human marine "things" were more human than the "two steppers", the understated allegory made me start with the casual reference to binary thinking and secured this powerful little story four stars.

The Deeps of the Sky by Elizabeth Bear **
Rolling metaphor, wondrous names, slow unwrapping of the substance of a tale, alas these do not make a story. Something does happen, but it's predictable and fails to make a slab of glossy prose any less boring. Two stars and a strong coffee.

Drive by James SA Corey *****
At last, the short story format applied ideally. Good characters, interesting themes and a compelling story. A Mars setting usually works and the accompanying political jitters are as old as Kim Stanley Robinson. Corey assembles these and good hard sci-fi to provide a memorable take home message. Not a quiet moment. Five stars and I'll be checking out more of his work.

The Road to NPS by Sandra McDonald and Stephen D Covey ****
Another stronger plot and characterization, McDonald and Covey develop a tension and inevitability in a story spanning from Samoan sand to Europan slush. Enjoyable characters are tested to a soporific conclusion.

Sweet as a Dream and Fleeting as a Sigh by John Barnes ***
Serious AI navel gazing faster than human thought, this story is probably targeted at AI readership. Conversely, forays into human feelings and motivation lead to a slow read (for humans at least), although the conclusion is a giant leap from any intelligence. "I can Remember it for You Wholesale" without the cred, one hundred and one stars in binary.

Macy Minnot's Last Christmas on Dione, Ring Racing, Fiddler's Green, the Potter's Garden by Paul McAuley****
Strong perennial characters and reflections on lives lived fully make McAuley's story one worthy of his reputation. Wandering the solar system illuminates what it is to be human as a character disperses her father's ashes. Real people, fine allegory pulls an easy four stars.

Safety Tests by Kristine Kathryn Rusch****
Drill down into small facet of space travel - pilot testing. Observing the human element and variables is both interesting and communicated expertly by Rusch to four stars.

Bricks, Sticks, Straw by Gwyneth Jones**
Decaying AIs become erratic after being stranded off Earth, I think, but one feels stranded in this similarly erratic story where you count the pages to the end. This author can do better and the editor needs to rely less on reputations and push for a sound product.

Tycho and the Ants by Hannu Rajaniemi *
Fantasy mumbo jumbo - I'm afraid I read this on remote control, finding engagement a struggle.

Obelisk by Stephen Baxter ***
It doesn't hint at Baxter's good work but this Mars-based human story is reflective and a welcome step up in this anthology.

Vainglory by Alastair Reynolds ****
Reynolds's comfortable style renders this creative solar system spanning tale of love and fate a worthwhile read. The technical elements meet the Reynolds usual standard and remind me why I like his work. The plot hangs together but does not stand very tall - obviously he is an author who needs space to get wound up and found this collection undemanding.

Water Rights by An Owomoyela ****
Technically well secured, this story is a little erratic in style but remains true to the theme of this anthology, that of near future and technically feasible plots.

The Peak of Eternal Light by Bruce Sterling ****
This begins as an odd tale exploring the marriage customs of post-human inhabitants of Mercury. It develops well with interesting allegory and sound technical detail. The bicycle elements show how much a story can grow in quality with the luxury of a few more pages, Sterling's contribution being longer than the others in this anthology.

Life on the high frontier
By Alex Tolley
I really liked this collection of 13 stories themed around the life of people living is a settled solar system. The first story by Pat Cadigan "The Girl-Thing Who Went out for Sushi", is brilliant, and has just won the Hugo for best novellete. Cordwainer Smith couldn't have done better. Other stories that I thought stood out - Paul McAuley's "Macy Minnot's Last Christmas on Dione, Fiddler's Green, the Potter's Garden", Rusch's "Safety Test", Gwyneth Jones' "Bricks, Sticks, Straw" and An Owomoyela's "Water Rights". Sterling's "The Peak of Eternal Light" was a great bookemd, with shades of Pohl's "Day Million" in its depiction of a very different society on Mercury. All the other stories were engaging, none were poor.

I highly recommend this collection.

The Iceman Cometh, by Eugene O'Neill

Eugene O’Neill was the first American playwright to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. He completed The Iceman Cometh in 1939, but he delayed production until after the war, when it enjoyed a long run of performances in 1946 after receiving mixed reviews. Three years after O'Neill's death, Jason Robards starred in a Broadway revival that brought new critical attention to O’Neill’s darkest and most nihilistic play. In the half century since, The Iceman Cometh has gained enormously in stature, and many critics now recognize it as one of the greatest plays in American drama. The Iceman Cometh focuses on a group of alcoholics and misfits who endlessly discuss but never act on their dreams, and Hickey, the traveling salesman determined to strip them of their pipe dreams.

Makes you think!
By Dane
This play makes you think....think about your own life. The action centers around a group of 'down and out'ers in a dive bar for career drunks, located in 1920s New York. The plot develops when Hickey, a long-time occasional visitor, returns, and tries to encourage these ne'er do wells to improve their lives.

A great play, with fantastic speeches and vivid imagery. The characters are colorful, and use a lot of language, and the subject matter of the play may offend more sensitive readers. This play is thought-provoking, and made me think about the direction of my own life, and the lies I tell myself about why I can't/won't do some things to make my life better...and where I may end up if I don't change my own direction....which seems to be the author's intent.

This play is definitely worth the read, with few weaknesses, if any, to list. Entertaining, thought-provoking, colorful, and serious. Occasionally funny, but very interesting.

Dark and thematic, very well done
By jayshiggs
Really enjoyed this story, it is unpredictable and speaks on human nature in an unusual/original way.
I love less than dashing characters and this story is chock full. It really gets to the dark parts of the human psyche. How we dilute ourselves, use each other and succumb to the worst part of ourselves more often than we all would like to admit. I'm in my late 30s now and could relate to the idea of just 'giving up' moreso than when I was younger. I probably would like this less if I read this as a teenager or in my early 20s. You need to have lived a bit and been truly disappointed in life before you can relate to the material fully.

He's Coming....set the table........Eugene O'Neill
By Keene
One of the greatest plays ever written. As good as anything by Sam Beckett.

I'd seen the play decades ago, the version with Lee Marvin as Hickey and Fredric March as Harry Hope. Robert Ryan stole that show. Excellent version, almost as good as the one with Jason Robards. Laid out here in written format is very good as well.

There are all kinds of critics that branded this play as pessimistic..... Illusions, delusions, loss of courage, guilt and insanity and the rest of the human condition are covered pretty well by O'Neill. He had compassion for his characters in this play because he knew these types and he was one......

Conversation and dialogue by misfits and losers in a seedy bar in New York in 1912 may not appeal to people today but if you are the type of person looking for the truth in art...you'll find it here....

3 sections of Flirts!
By JigsawGirl
All of the stories were good reads. I liked the way each story picked up characters from the previous book.

The final section, More Flirts!, had the funniest stories. Pickup Lessons was hysterical. I was in tears. It appealed to my slightly warped sense of humor.

Three books with Fifteen Stories
By Jutzie
A Bundle of Flirts! by Lisa Scott
Three books - Fifteen Stories
Holiday Flirts!
I really enjoy the Flirt! stories. They are fairly short and quick reads and I enjoy the way the author integrates the characters from one story into another. At times it's something little like one character just popping in on the story and other times it's the friend or relatives story. And there are usually little quirks that add the humor.
Spooked by Love: For Marnie James the scariest thing this Halloween for her is considering dating again. When she meets Jeff Williams at a Halloween party her daughter went to, she has to decide if she's willing to date again. Is there a ghost of a chance or will she be too spooked to try?
Holiday Rush: Lindy Richards loved her fancy clothes and the chic shop she managed. She also loved Christmas. One night a ripped pair of tights changed her life.
Alexander Whitney was managing one of the Save Land stores for his dad. Bidding his time before he could move on to a different city. When there was an emergency involving his store parking lot life got a lot more interesting.

Missing Christmas: Ginny McDonald had told her family she'd be moving from New York to Florida in the first story, Spooked By Love. She was in love with Ryan and his job had him moving. Now it's a few days before Christmas and she's homesick. She misses her family, decorating and snow. And Florida's sunshine didn't have anything Christmas about it. She wanted to go home and there was nothing that Ryan could say or do to changer her mind. Or was there?
Living in Arizona I could fully relate to this story. Away from family and looking at a cactus with lights and Santa hats is far from a Midwest Christmas

Tingle All the Way: Jessica Richards didn't have the memory of any great Christmas or her sister Lindy's excitement over the holiday. When she called the police on a would be robber, she just ended up ruining a little girls Christmas. Every thing she tried to make it up to Morgan just ended up in a bigger mess.
Charlie Grant was watching his niece and wanted to give her the best Christmas ever. The nosy neighbor ruined that idea. The more the woman tried to make things right...the more he was intrigued with her. Maybe he would have the best Christmas ever.

Giving Up Guys: Three of Ginny's friends were out celebrating New Years Eve when they decided they would give up guys for a month. Ginny and Ryan seemed happy in Florida, but Lori, Claire and Harper seemed to be finding only duds when it came to men.
Lori takes an upholstery class and her resolve for no guys is on shaky ground when the Tom Murphy, the instructor, turns out to be an uber-hottie.
Harper Reese figures she's safe from men when she takes a belly dancing class. Figures that handsome Patrick Dunn is a student too.
Claire Pennington signs up for scuba diving classes, forgetting how she's not fond of swimming. After class she finds a friend in bartender Nate Johnson.
As always Lisa Scott finds a unique way to end the book with a glimpse at the previous couples who met in the other four stories.

Wedding Flirts!
Lisa Scott's Flirt! books are full of humor and romance. The fifth story always brings everyone from the first four stories together for a finale, and now and then they even pop in from previous books. Which I personally enjoy when you get to see the people you met come back for a special appearance. Great stories that are also short enough to read when you aren't in the mood for a long novel. They are connected by characters, but standalone so that you can read one and come back for more later.
My Fake Fiance: When Samantha Cooper gets a wedding invitation from her arch frenemy from school she decides she needs to find a way to go with her head held high. So she hires a fake fiance with a fake accent and fake job. Justin Banks was only acting for the money but he found himself wishing he was the kind of guy Sam would really want, because she could sure be the right girl for him.

Bridesmaid Blues: Micki Keegan was invited to be in so many weddings that she started blogging about it. Of course that just got her invited to be in even more. She wasn't at all blue about being a bridesmaid, no plans to marry, ever. It wasn't in her family genes to have good marriages. And then she met Ben, not the one night stand type. All or nothing.

The One That Got Away: Miranda, who was first introduced in Flirts! The Hot Girls Friend, just wanted to find a rich Australian to marry. And she found one. Running into someone from her past at a wedding made her realize she had unfinished business. Kevin had never known why Miranda had left him without any explanation. And now they meet when they are both engaged and about to get married...to other people.

Wedding Auditions: Kelly Warner has no desire to be in a bridezilla wedding. Since the nutty woman was marrying her best friend Bryce, she had no choice but to audition. Yup, the woman had three dozen men and women trying out to be in her wedding. At least bridezilla had a handsome step-brother. Liam Streeter was the one bright spot of all the craziness.

Do Over: Moira Moore was the most wanted photographer around, especially weddings. She wondered if she'd always be on this side of the camera looking in when it came to love. Then came the wedding where one of the groomsman brought back every humiliating moment she had felt one day at school. A humiliation that had hung on for ten long years. Craig Fitzpatrick.

More Flirts!
These five stories follow the romances of the Carter family. Three brothers and two sisters who had a surprise when their mother passed away, she had money they didn't know about and each of them became millionaires. The problem with that was they never knew if the guys or gals they dated really cared for them or if they were just after the Carter money.
Pickup Lessons: Stone Kinney is an absolutely adorable character. He is so smart in academics, but clueless with women. After reading books on dating he stakes out the perfume counter at the mall and uses cheesy pick-up lines. At the end of the day the gal working the counter, Kyla Carter, offers to give him lessons on picking up women. As it was obvious his books had failed him.
Ex Therapy: Aubrey Carter, sister to Kyla from Pickup Lessons, needs to find out why her relationships never last. Realizing only six guys in her past made it past a few dates she targeted them. Writing up a survey she began contacting them. They didn't seem to be that excited to see her, but she pressed on. What better way to find out how to make her relationships last longer, then by finding out why they failed?
Mr. Wrong: Lisa Scott has outdone herself in this hilarious story. Diana Hart, Aubrey's therapist from Ex Therapy, needs to write a second book. She's decided to write on finding Mr. Wrong. She dresses much different from her usual conservative clothes and hits the bars instead of meeting men at charity balls or her usual outings. She keeps running into Toby Carter, Kyla and Aubrey's brother, but he's too much like her usual type. One blind date outing is enough to give her a lifetime of nightmares.
I Know Who You Kissed Last Night: Lisa Scott has outdone herself in this hilarious story.
The Girl in the Pink Hat: When Zoe's cousin Jenny died, she left a bucket list for her to fulfill. It was hard to get motivated and the list seemed impossible. Then one day she saw a missed connection on Craigslist and contacted the author of it, Nick Carter. He was looking for a girl in a pink hat that had been on the train. She was the wrong girl, but for some reason he wanted to help her with her list. To live some of his life through helping her.

just right!
By Amy D.
I am so glad I stumbled upon these, thanks to the free deal for the original "Flirts." I loved them so much, I've downloaded the "Bundles" and I'm working on the rest. Lisa Scott has a gift for writing short stories - she balances character development and plot with brevity just perfectly. (Difficult to do!) Each story stands alone, so I can finish one quickly when I need a break, without staying up till 2am because I can't put the book down :-) But all 5 stories in each batch are interconnected, so you'll want to read them in order and it's fun to see how the author ties the characters together.

The Wedding Flirts stories pull in characters from earlier bundles, and even though the stories are stand-alone, I like to read things in order. Here is the order of the Flirts by published date: 1. Flirts 2. Beach 3. Holiday 4. Fairy Tale 5. Wedding 6. More Flirts 7. Reunion. I've downloaded the bundles, which do not necessarily have them in order.

I recently saw a re-run of one of the Jesse Stone movies on Hallmark channel and being a big Tom Selleck fan immediately liked it. I then ordered the whole movie set from Amazon and subsequently the whole Kindle Jesse Stone book sets 1-13. Loved them all, movies and novels. Was very sorry when I found out that Mr. parker had passed on but am hopeful his co-author will continue the series in the same vein. Being from New England ( Maine) I can readily identify with the scenarios.
The only thing I would note is that the movies had the police force as being only 3 officers for a town supposedly around 50,000 people ( according to one of the movies). That is pretty unrealistic. The books quoted a 12 man force which more realistic. My own home town of Belfast has a much larger force for a town of only some 8,000.
Other than that ( and I realize that was Hollywood license and not Mr. Parker), this is a tremendous series and one which is immensely readable and very, very hard to put down.

if you buy the books individually on Amazon, you will save money! about $7 if you purchased them today! I thought bundling was supposed to be cheaper. Penguin books must have been bought out by a cable/phone company!

Live To Read
By Chels
This book picks up right where it left off. Beth and Xavier are happy to be together, Ivy is still learning the ropes of human life, and Gabriel is still cool and collected. Life is pretty good for the angels, but happiness rarely lasts forever. Not long into the book, Beth is captured by Jake, a fallen angel, and taken to Hell aka Hades. Jake admits to wanting Beth from afar, that she makes him feel something more. Beth does not take kindly to this, she responds by fighting the whole way. She also meets quite a few interesting characters, from a woman who sold her soul to save a friend to a previously selfish girl who gives up her chance at freedom to save Beth from the literal Hounds of Hell.

Beth gets in plenty of trouble in Hades, one would imagine an angel wouldn't be well-behaved in that place. Jake actually saves her multiple times, her friends try to keep her out of trouble and provide her with some comfort. Beth's good intentions get her into trouble in Hades, one time too many. They say the road to Hell is paved with good intentions...how true that saying is in this book.

Beth is a fun character to read about. She is very...pure, the author portrays her as wanting the best for others. She is determined, sometimes foolish, serene, and strong. The reader does not see too much of Xavier in this novel, but Xavier still very obviously loves Beth. He is just as handsome and caring as ever. Gabriel is still the cool one of the bunch, taking everything as it comes. Ivy is slightly more excitable, she'd do anything to save Beth. Jake is the evil angel with the handsome exterior, he is charismatic and too suave for his own good. The reader will enjoy getting re-acquainted with these characters and getting to know the secondary characters better.

This book was fast-paced, interesting, and fun to read. The author writes very smoothly and the transitions are far from choppy. This book is recommended to young adults/teens-especially those who enjoyed Halo.

Great read! Exciting and almost as good as the first
By Lisa
What can I say? Alexandra Adornetto is back to put us through the emotional ringer! After a Halloween seance goes terribly wrong, Bethany Woods is kidnapped into the frightening depths of hell where she must spend her days with Jake Thorn, trapped and only able to hope for release. While Hades wasn't as brilliant as Halo, it was only by a very tiny amount and that was probably due to my longing for the 24/7 time we had with Xavier like in the first book. He is still very much a big part of this novel though, so don't fret!

Jake, one of the princes of Hell, was a completely evil character in Halo, bringing distress and pain into the lives of mortals. Now, we see a more compassionate and caring side of him, if that's possible. Does he really have feelings for Bethany or is it all just a ploy to have her be his evil bride? I found this mystery and their relationship very intriguing. Even with Xavier in the picture, you can't help but wonder! He offers to take away her bad memories, pampers her and falls over his feet trying to please her... Perhaps Jake isn't as cold-blooded as we think he is. Hell is littered with all sorts of people - torturers, lusty lovers, doomed souls and more. Although Beth runs into her fair share of nasties, she befriends Tucker and Hanna, people who aid her in her escape. With the help of Tuck, she drinks from a river which allows her to astral project herself, at any time, to anywhere she wants. Best thing that could ever happen! Hello, regular Xavier appearances.

Although the lovers are in two different places physically, they can still find each other in their minds. Xavier can sense Beth's presence and remains strong in his search for her, with the help of Ivy and Gabriel. I love that Xavier really stepped up to the task and was completely determined, not afraid in the face of danger. On Earth, Beth's companions are having their own adventure, trying to find a portal to Hell in order to rescue her. The big surprise? Molly. Oblivious, immature, human Molly has her eyes opened to the supernatural world and tags along on these missions! Still in love with Gabe, there's always a question about whether he feels something in return. It sounds impossible and ridiculous (and no, just NO!) but...what if? Great character development once again - I can't wait for more!

When Jake is enraged, he makes his way to Earth and threatens to end Xavier's life...unless Beth makes a deal with him. Obviously, we know that's a bad move but what she can do? The final parts of Hades will surely make you gasp. Something happens with Jake....something happens with Xavier...something happens with Beth... Definitely some lose-your-mind material. Huge cliffhanger ahead - beware! I cannot wait for Heaven and know that it'll be magnificent. The series will end on a high and I'm very excited for it! The foreshadowing in this one's got my brain gears going....

Not as good as the first, but still decent
By SuburbanHousewifeMN
If you enjoyed Halo, then you will find the same sense of writing in Hades. While the author's growth is evident in her ability to bring the story to life, the intense, edge of your seat, waiting-for-the-first-kiss power is void in this book. Bethany has to find a way to survive Hades while the Heavenly family above is stuck trying to figure out how to help her without starting Armageddon. This story is more of a profile on how she must keep her faith in order to overcome evil. Adornetto makes Hades (Hell) a bit of a lax hang out. While she gives it all of the treatments that one would expect, she leaves out any details which would make you really feel or imagine the pain and horrors that the souls go through who exist down there. It is a party club scene gone wrong with some hints at torture about. This keeps the book in line for middle school age range, and some high school. The author leaves the ending wide open for the next book... this is a good hold-over, but I hope the third installment of this series offers more romance and adventure.
