Two extremely short stories

I mistakenly thought that this was more of a chapter book with two long stories and would be the length of an average Encyclopedia Brown book. I was wrong. It contains two very short stories, which totals about 15 Kindle pages with a location number ending in 205. It would be fine for a young reader who likes short stories, but I wish the description would have been more clear. I almost bought it as a gift for my nephew and am so glad I bought it for myself first to preview.

The Patrician transports

If you're looking for a beautifully written, fast-paced, sexy Roman adventure, this is the book for you. First I fell in love with Jared, then I found myself rooting for plucky Bryna to win his stubborn heart. I enjoyed it from page one, & so will you!

Great Roman Drama

I love tales of ancient Rome and 'The Patrician' is a wonderful story of a Celtic woman who was kidnapped from her home and taken to Rome and a Roman man who was betrayed and sold into slavery. The book does a wonderful job of painting scenes of the ancient world. The hero is quite complex, with a touching and intriguing back story. The heroine is a bit of a brat at times, though this is supposedly due to her being out of her element and resisting the only way she can. She did come off as a bit more prickly than strong, but overall she is a likable character that I felt for and wanted to see overcome her hardships. Her motivation in finding her brother, for whose abduction she feels responsible, was a strong one and helped us relate to her.

The author has a great sense for the ancient world. She describes scenes in such detail you can taste the dust in the air and smell the scents of the marketplace. The book could have used more editing, however, which is the only thing that prevented me from giving it 5 stars. There were misspelled words, the wrong homonym used (such as "there" for "their") and other things that might not bother some readers, but sort of made me stop reading. I look forward to reading more of her books, though. I just hope she gets a better editor for the next ones. I am looking forward to reading the story of the heroine's brother and the hero's best friend.

About the Author
Laurent L Jacque is the Walter B Wriston Professor of International Finance & Banking at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy (Tufts University) and Director of its International Business Studies Program. He is the author of two books Management and Control of Foreign Exchange Risk (Kluwer Academic Publishers, 1996), and Management of Foreign Exchange Risk: Theory and Praxis (Lexington Books, 1978) as well as many articles on International Risk Management, Multinational Control Systems and Capital Markets. He served as an advisor and consultant to the Foreign Exchange Rate Forecasting Service of Wharton Econometrics, Forecasting Associates (1982 1990) and as a member of Water Technologies Inc's board of directors (1991 1994). Jacque received the James L Paddock award for teaching excellence at The Fletcher School in 1996. Disappointing

I purchased this in hopes of getting some basic insights into how to deal with some of the challenges you might run into when stripping furniture such as complex legs, panel drawer fronts, etc. Essentially this is the equivalent of the instructions that come with most commercially available paint stripping products but not as well edited.

About the Author
Flora Thompson was born in 1876 in a hamlet in Oxfordshire. Her first job was an assistant to the postmistress in a town eight miles away. She married young, and her husband became a postmaster. Her first book was a collection of poems, but she is best remembered for her three autobiographical novels which became the Lark Rise trilogy. A fourth volume, Still Glides the Stream, was published posthumously in 1948. She died in Devon in 1947.

Delightful view of British country life

I have completed the first book in the trilogy, and though I agree with another reviewer that it has the same kind of feel as the "Little House on the Prairie" and "Anne of Green Gables" series' (all of which I love), I don't think I would put this in the same age range as either. The "Little House" series was something my friends and I read starting in elementary school, and my daughters did the same. The "Anne" books were more junior high to high school, and we have enjoyed them as adults as well. Though Thompson's books have the same rural, homey feel to them, I think the lack of an ever-present storyline would make them less appealing to the average youth today who is used to instant gratification and constant entertainment (I know I am generalizing). I'm sure there are some youth that would love them, but they are much more an insightful, descriptive look at country life with stories scattered here and there and I believe they will appeal more to adults. I find them fascinating and I think the people who used these books as a basis for the PBS series have done a brilliant job of creating a consistent storyline from the threads of narrative Thompson has woven together. If you have watched the series and loved it, don't approach the books as "the script" for what you have seen. View it more as background material and enjoy a deeper look into what made the people who they are. If you have read the books and are just considering seeing the series, don't expect to see what you have read. They are both wonderful examples of their own art form. Let each stand alone and appreciate them for what they are.

ETA: I have now completed the book and have seen all four seasons of the PBS series. I love them both, but would still caution people not to expect the movies to be an exact visual portrayal of the books. I admit that I am one who has been upset at times when I have seen a movie "based on" a classic book that has taken great liberties in their portrayal and completely changed characters who are critical to the storyline. However, I had not read these books before seeing the first three seasons of the PBS series, so the show was my introduction to the stories and characters. I still thoroughly enjoyed the books and thought it was fun to see what had inspired many of the stories in the TV series.

The Television Series Doesn't Follow The Book..But You Will still Love It

Very different from the BBC Series of the same name, but just as wonderful. A fabulous, interesting read. You may even read it again. I read and researched enough to know that it was not a written version of the Television Series, Lark Rise to Candleford, which I have watched over and over, and never tire of it... But you will not be disappointed and you will learn even more about the time and the history of country living and the changes from one century heading into the next. And towns turning into places almost unrecognizable to those who grew up there. Beautiful Trilogy.

Love the emphasis on the poor and the lower classes

Authentic description of life in rural Oxfordshire in the late 19th century. Authentic, in that it is largely autobiographical, although told in the third person. Love the emphasis on the poor and the lower classes, instead of depicting only the very wealthy upperclass as much of English literature of this era does. Love the description and the feeling that goes with it of the natural world. Loved seeing the interaction of persons who are finding their place in the community, and are content with their lot, while others are struggling to better themselves.

A Nice Fear For Many Travellers Short Story

A woman visits Italy to spread her father's ashes and start a short term piece of employment. However her cousin who was supposed to meet her is nowhere to be found. She decides to find a phone and call him but her plan is stopped short in the arrival hall by a handsome man. Unfortunately for her he is an airport policeman and she's got some explaining to do.

This is a standalone short story, the story does wrap up nicely, it certainly is not a taster as some other reviews have misleadingly written. It also isn't a Romance story as some have said which may also be putting some potential readers off. There's no Fifty Shades of Grey, or even looking lovingly into each other's eyes type action in these pages. You also don't get to see the canals, people, sites or city of Venice through the eyes of the narrator if you were after a travel tale for those purposes. Christmas in Venice is set entirely in the airport and other than that is the time of year the narrator travelled, that's as much it has to do with Christmas. It's a fun imagine if this was me experience type read, that many frustrated by delays and other things that go wrong when travelling, especially by plane can relate to, hoping it doesn't ever happen to them.

Christmas in Venice does use a bit of artistic licence, I can't imagine if they thought there was even a chance the threat was real they would allow people to stand around or even attempt to open a bag in this situation rather than simply destroying it. The policeman also first stops her only metres away from leaving her bag the whole scenario wouldn't have happened like that but this is a piece of fiction after all. It's an enjoyable five to ten minute at most read.

Her latest Christmas gift to us is the wonderful story, Christmas in Venice - and it is in it's brevity has given us everything a reader could want - a lovely girl coming to gorgeous Venice, a gorgeous policeman who has to stop her, and they leave us waiting for more!!!

Olivia Moretti is a Canadian of Italian descent. She has gotten a job in Venice where her fluency in several languages is key. She has just arrived into the Venice airport, deplaned, and she needs to go to, let's say, freshen up, and leaves her luggage with a kindly grandmotherly lady for a few minutes.

By the time Olivia comes back, the lady is gone, and this gorgeous policeman is having a cow over unattended luggage!!!! Moreover, Olivia's suitcase is making strange sounds!

The policeman, Alessandro Rossi, reads Olivia the riot act for leaving her suitcase alone - her alibi, the lady is gone - AND the luggage's strange sounds make Rossi go to extreme measures -

The story is a gift to the reader and shows the writing brilliance of Taylor and the fun that can be had by reading a small story and expecting BIG THINGS for the rest of the story.

A writer of several novels Falling For Rain and The Billionaire's Secret, Taylor deserves to be read and enjoyed and certainly this story, Christmas in Venice, brightens our hearts and want all to have a Buon Natale!!!!!

Excellent for the Hispanic-American going to France

My dear friend from Guatemala is moving to France. Her English is pretty good, but the prospect of studying French, from English, seemed daunting (also crazy, since both are Roman languages, with many common characteristics----granted, the pronunciations are very different, but a native speaker of Spanish can read, perhaps, 60-70% of the words in a French newspaper). This book eliminates that unnecessary extra step. She loves it, as it makes her language-learning MUCH easier!

I have not had a chance to finish reading this book, but I find it very funny in the way that you learn a bit of French culture ... and of course the language ... That's my job waiting, but I recommend this book for anyone who wants a glimpse into French ... this book is a good introduction ...

Bought for my wife. She already knows french; this was a reinforcement. She is very pleased; very good for the pronunciation.
Recomended.
